Alongside 'good afternoon passengers, this is your captain speaking,' it was the announcement we'd all been waiting impatiently for: International holidays are back on the agenda, as of May 17.

The government has outlined a list of destinations that are safe for Brits to travel to, dubbed the ‘green list’. The list will be reviewed every three weeks, but with a handful of places already on the cards, it’s finally time to (tentatively) get excited about a summer holiday abroad.

Before you stuff your go-to linen sundresses into your carry-on, having a glance over the current holiday options beforehand is wise. Four destinations so far have been given the green light (New Zealand and Australia are potential additions to come) and each requires a different sartorial game plan.

Time to get your suitcase on standby and track down your passport. Here’s what to wear for every destination on the green list:

What to pack for your summer holiday abroad

Rustic chic in Portugal

Whether you’re heading to the popular Algarve, Faro or Lisbon areas, expect rustic charm and quiet glamour - your holiday wardrobe should tick those boxes, too.

If you’ve picked Portugal over the other destinations, it’s likely a sunny family-friendly beach break was your plan of action, so swimwear and lightweight beach dresses require consideration. Temperatures in June reach 24 degrees on average, so your key accessories will be sunglasses and a proper hat.

A strategic drop of glamour - think oversized sunglasses, gold jewellery or a silk hair scarf - will be welcomed, and don’t forget to throw a pair of chinos in for a practical sightseeing option.

Clever layering in Iceland

If Iceland is in your sights, it’s likely you’re keen on a change of scenery and some adventure, since temperatures reach 9 degrees in the summer. With myriad hiking trails to embark on, and fishing being a popular leisure activity across the country, comfortable waterproof gear is a must.

A pair of chunky walking boots and a warm fleece jacket should be first on your packing list, though you could wear these to travel in so as to save room in your case. Take thermal under layers to keep you warm, without adding bulk, if the temperature drops.

Understated luxe in Israel

Whether you’re packing for the humid heat of Tel Aviv, or the cooler temperatures of Jerusalem, one thing’s for sure: this holiday is about stealth sophistication. The mercury will soar to the thirties in June and July, so breathable, natural fabrics - think cotton and linen - are your best bets. By day, a waft-worthy maxi dress and a sunhat are ideal, and you’ll want a statement bikini to hit the beaches.

Dress up for evening here: wedge espadrilles or strappy metallic block heels and statement earrings are the perfect partners to a printed silk jumpsuit.

Functional fashion in Gibraltar

Having previously not been on the radar as a serious summer destination, Gibraltar on Spain’s South Coast is set to be a busy tourist hot spot this summer. With picturesque limestone caves, sandals you can actually walk in are a must, and comfy practical separates are great day options that can take you from a rocky walk, to sunbathing poolside, to lunch by the sea.

The benefit of the Spanish weather means a bold linen co-ord should be on your radar: Asceno's is a stylish option, but Arket and H&M should be your go-to on the high street.
