Holiday spirit alive at Russell Hometown Christmas

Dec. 7—RUSSELL — Christmas music, horses and train rides brought dozens of people to downtown Russell for this year's Hometown Christmas.

The 40-degree weather didn't stop families from feeling the holiday spirit Thursday evening. Kelli Lutz, owner of Sweet and Sassy Cotton Candy from Ashland, was sitting on a corner with Dane Thomas, assistant to the business, selling fresh-made cotton candy.

"We are trying to help them revitalize and bring more business to Russell," Lutz said. She has made an appearance at many events downtown.

"It's a fun time," she added.

Brennan Plummer, alongside with his wife and two daughters, were hopping off the mini train taking people for a stroll through town. He said the event was a great opportunity to enjoy family fun.

Plummer said, "This is a cool thing and the girls love coming down here. It's nice to see businesses doing stuff," he said. Christmas to him is enjoying the family time and love that they share.

Two young family members, Kylie Fannin and Kendall Fannin, were among the crowd. They spoke about their favorite time of the holiday season. Kendall recalled a great moment with the Elf on the Shelf.

"He made us put sprinkles on eggs and the next day it turned into a chicken," she said. "I love getting to find my elves every day."

The main attraction that had an ever-growing line was the horse carriage rides. Two horses from Rocky Point Farm located in Kenna, West Virginia, owned by Jack Coon and Robin Stewart, gave free rides around town.

The event also included a parade that featured local bands, dance groups and more.

Disney characters, such as Mickey Mouse and Winnie the Pooh, were on hand to greet those who attended.
