HOLLAND - The Holland Christian girls swimming and diving team knew a state championship was possible.

But the Maroons also knew it wouldn't be easy, especially with a Bloomfield Hills Marian team ready to close the meet with its strongest events.

Marian's closing speed was enough to overtake the Maroons and claim the Division 3 state championship on Saturday at Holland Community Aquatic Center.

That didn't make it a less historic performance for the Maroons. Holland Christian finished second at the state meet for the first time since 1997.

"We talked about being content with whatever we walked away with. Today, this is what we had and they just happened to have some really talented girls who swam really well this weekend," Holland Christian coach Lisa Myrick said. "They had more than we had today, and that is OK.

"We still finished second, which is a really big deal. I want them to be proud of themselves for everything they did this season. We continued to shoot for it and didn't give up and got the back-half done - it just wasn't enough."

"We are happy. It has been since coach's sophomore year that we got second. It is still a very big deal. We earned it and worked our best for it," Holland Christian senior Claire DeKievit said. "We weren't very happy with the front half of the meet. We knew we had a strong back half, and we knew we had to kick it in."

Despite a few events where Holland Christian swimmers finished lower than their preliminary seeds, the Maroons surged back into the meet in the back half and led Marian 134.5-133 after the 500 freestyle.

"We controlled the things we can control and couldn't control what they did," Myrick said.

Marian edged the Maroons in the 200 freestyle relay and took a 173-168.5 lead with three events to go.

After the 100 backstroke, Marian led 188-185.5, then won the 100 breaststroke to put the title out of reach barring a disqualification in the final relay.
