The Holland Christian boys golf team is the 2022 Bulldog Invitational champions.

The Maroons won with a team score of 356. On a rainy day in tough conditions that included a one-hour rain delay in the middle of the round, Oliver VandenBerg led the Maroons with an 85, which was the fourth-lowest in the field. Ethan Hertgers shot a season-low 87, which was fifth-lowest,  and Michael Pierce shot a season-low 88, which was ninth-lowest in the field.

VandenBerg, Hertgers and Pierce received medals for finishing in the top-10 individually. Cade VandenBosch shot a 96 and Harry Halbert shot a 98, as the Maroons won the team tiebreaker for 1st place based on the 5th man’s score.

Hamilton finished runner-up after tiebreakers at the Bulldog Invitational at Lake Doster with a team score of 356. Eli Timmerman won the individual medalist honors with a 78, five shots clear of the rest of the field. Jacob Lange finished with an 89, Ben Boehm with a 93, and Keaton Haverdink at 96.

BOYS GOLF

Zeeland East claims fourth in rain-shortened competition

The Chix played at Pigeon Creek today and it wasn't exactly golf weather.  Teeing off in the rain at 9:00 a.m. it continued to rain throughout the round.  Play was called at 12:20 as conditions continued to take their toll on the course and the players.

Team scores were based on the front nine scores and the Chix finished fourth with a score of 179.  Leading the team today was Jack Anderson with a 42, Kole Meschke shooting a 44, and Gabe Jarvis with a 46.  Jake Middleton and Brady Nykamp each shot a 47.

Anderson was named to the All-Conference Honorable Mention team.

BASEBALL

Coopersville 6, Hamilton 2

Despite outhitting the Broncos 10-6 the Hawkeyes fell in the third game of the league series by a score of 6-2.  Brant Goodpaster, Thano Klett, Blake Thomas and Brayden Geurink each had two hits for the Hawkeyes.  Brant Goodpaster took the loss on the mound throwing six innings, striking out five and giving up only two earned runs.

Zeeland East 3, Calvin Christian 3

Zeeland East hosted Calvin Christian on Wednesday for a non-conference single game.  The game ended after seven innings due to rain, with the score tied at 3.

Max Salas takes a no-decision in the game for Zeeland East.  Salas pitched 5 and 2/3 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits, while striking out nine batters.  Nick Williams came in and finished the final 1 and 1/3 innings, not surrendering a hit and striking out two batters.

Offensively, Trevor Raade had a double, two walks and a run scored.  Max Salas also added a hit and two hit by pitches in the game.

Zeeland East hosts Muskegon on Thursday to finish the OK-Green conference schedule.

SOFTBALL

Zeeland West 11, Spring Lake 1

The Dux came to play Wednesday night. They scored in five of the six innings played to win 11-1 over Spring Lake.

Maddie Wyckoff was the winning pitcher for the Dux. She threw six innings allowing one run on three hits, and striking out five.

"Maddie was great on the mound tonight." said coach Scott Sliva. "She was hitting her spots and had a lot of confidence in the circle. We were proud of her outing and the team backed her up with great defense and big bats."

Alexa Brott was big at the plate. She was a single away from hitting the cycle. She drove in four runs with a double, triple, and a home run.

"Alexa was strong at the plate," Sliva said. "She has been working through some challenges at the plate and it was great to see the hard work pay off"

Zeeland West Dux Varsity tallied 15 hits in the game.  Emily Kragt, Brott, Carly Sleeman, and Morgan Patrick all collected multiple hits for the Dux. Sleeman, Brott, and Kragt all had three hits to lead Zeeland West Dux Varsity. Izzy Zamora, Taylor Zwagerman, Wyckoff, and Makena Moungkhoun all added hits.

The Dux improve to 21-10 on the season. The second game of the doubleheader was called due to rain with Zeeland West leading 15-0 in the fourth inning.

BOYS LACROSSE

Rockford 12, West Ottawa 6

West Ottawa struggled to win face-offs and couldn't get much going on offense. Cole Tulgetske scored four goals and Trent Mulder and Cooper Nienhuis each scored for the Panthers.

Ian Geiersbach had 13 saves for the Panthers. WO finished the season with a record of 13-6.

GIRLS SOCCER

West Ottawa 1, Grandvillele 0

Relentless pressure by Chelsea Overbeek led to a scramble for the ball in front of the Bulldog goal which Overbeek converted for the game's only goal in the fourth minute. The remainder of the game was back and forth with Grandville creating chances that they were unable to convert. Grace Pedersen recorded the shutout with five saves.
