Holland Community Theatre presents 'Babes in Toyland'

HOLLAND — To kick off the holiday season, Holland Community Theatre will present its holiday musical, "Babes in Toyland."

The show opens Friday, Nov. 25, with a large cast of characters from classic nursery rhymes. Ken Holamon’s contemporary adaptation of the classic Victor Herbert holiday musical is a tale the whole family can enjoy, as the characters aim to save their beloved Mother Goose Village in time for Christmas.

Simple Simon (Sici Clark) and a toymaker elf (Vivian Harris) work in the Master Toymaker's Workshop.

Audiences first meet the Old Woman (who lives in a shoe) (BJ Danner) and the rest of the village on Christmas Eve as they decorate town square with wreaths and garlands. Every villager is excited, except for the old miser Barnaby (Chris Knoll), who is threatening to foreclose on the Old Woman's shoe unless the prettiest girl in town, Mary Contrary (Sara Verduzco) agrees to marry him.

But Mary is already in love with the dashing Tom-Tom (Cameron Griffin), and so, she and the other children of the shoe devise a plan to save their home while Barnaby plots with his bumbling henchmen.

"The cast and crew of 'Babes in Toyland' have truly enjoyed working on this whimsical, musical romp with the nursery rhyme characters," said director Cathy Van Lopik. "All of us are looking forward to sharing this delightful story with all of the young at heart."

Showtimes are 7 p.m. Friday-Saturday, Nov. 25 and 26, with a matinee at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 27. They continue into December on Thursdays-Saturdays, Dec. 1-3 and 8-10, with matinees at 2 p.m. Saturdays, Dec. 3 and 10. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students.
