Holland man starts swimming across Lake Michigan, track his progress online

Endurance swimmer Bryan Huffman started swimming across Lake Michigan, beginning Saturday morning at Rawley Point Lighthouse, just north of Manitowoc, Wisconsin, with a plan to finish about 30 hours later at Big Sable Point Lighthouse, in his home state.

He’s seeking to become the latest person to make it without a wet suit, a feat few others have accomplished.

His team sent the Free Press an email with a link you can use to track his progress.

"It's going to be a big challenge," Huffman told the Free Press last month. "It's a long way."

Last year, he swam the English Channel.

An ophthalmologist, Huffman is attempting to cross the Great Lake, in part, to raise money to give kids swim lessons at the Holland Aquatic Center, where he is a member. At about 8 a.m. local time, he and his small team left Wisconsin. An early report to the Free Press said he "looks great."

The 50 mile or more swim is in cold, sometimes choppy, waters. The most recent attempt — by fellow Michigander Jm Dreyer, who successfully crossed years ago — was thwarted earlier this month after only about 10 miles in by bad weather.

The doctor has said it is thrilling to attempt to "take something that seems undoable" and try it.
