Holland Patent, Canastota lose in field hockey regionals

SIDNEY - The 2022 field hockey season reached its conclusion for area teams with a pair of losses in regional play Saturday at Sidney High School.

Section III champions Holland Patent and Canastota were beaten Section IV counterparts Vestal and Whitney Point, respectively, in the second and third games of the day. Class A Cicero-North Syracuse had earned Section III its only win at the site when it shut out Greene in the opening game of Saturday's tripleheader.

Vestal was a 2-1 winner over Holland Patent in Class B and defending state champion Whitney Point defeated Canastota 9-0 in Class C.

Section III earned another win in Medina where Port Byron/Union Springs won 2-1 against Section VI Akron. Port Byron/Union Springs, Section III's Class D champion, earned the Class C tournament's lone at-large bid to fill out the quarterfinal round; the Panthers get Whitney Point next in Saturday's semifinals at Centereach on Long Island.

Cicero-North Syracuse and Port Byron/Union Springs will be trying to win Section III's first state field hockey title since Cazenovia won Class C back-to-back in 2011 and 2012. Rome Free Academy won Section III's most recent Class A title in 1994 when the state tournament had four classes.

Class B: Vestal 2, Holland Patent 1

The Vestal Golden Bears scored twice before halftime Saturday and defeated Section III Holland Patent 2-1 in Class B regional play.

Vestal (13-5-0) took a 1-0 lead on Adrienne Mayes' successful penalty stroke, and Grace Haven added a goal a short time later.

The Golden Bears carried their 2-0 lead to the fourth quarter before Holland Patent (14-5-0) broke up the shutout bid with a goal scored by Alivia Alexander.

Vestal goalie Reilly Storer stopped four of Holland Patent's five shots.

The Golden Bears meet Section VI Iroquois in Saturday's state semifinals.

Class C: Whitney Point 9, Canastota 0

Unbeaten Whitney Point is returning to the state final four. The Eagles (19-0-0) took another step toward an eighth state championship with Saturday's win. Brenna Bough scored four goals and assisted on a fifth, Genevieve Huston had two goals and two assists, Delana James and Sadee Short each had one goal and two assists, and eighth-grader Kylan Smith scored one goal and assisted on another.

Ashey Berge made one save for the Eagles who outshot Canastota's Raiders (13-4-0) 18-1 in their 13th shutout of the season. Whiteney Point has shut out each of its opponents over the last month, an eight-game steak that includes wins over the other two Section IV champions.

Canastota had won five games in a row and 13 of its last 14.
