Holland splits doubleheader with West Ottawa- High school sports rewind

The West Ottawa and Holland baseball teams split a non-confernce doubleheader on Friday night, with the Panthers winning the first game 5-1, and the Dutch won the second game 8-2.

The Panthers got out to a hot start in the first game, putting up a three-run lead in the first Inning that the Dutch just couldn't overcome. Cooper Terpstra pitched the complete game and allowed just one run.

For Holland, starting pitcher Sean Ruhf went three innings, allowing four earned runs on nine hits while striking out five. Isaiah Martinez entered the game and finished it without allowing a hit, going four innings and striking out 6 to keep the Dutch in the game.

Despite Martinez's efforts, the Dutch bats were quiet and put together only 3 hits. Jackson Van Hekken had 2 and Andon Grigg had the third.

In the second game of the afternoon, the Dutch came away with an 8-6 win. Holland led from the start of the game and never relented.

Ryan Duff started on the mound for the Dutch, going four innings and allowing two earned runs on nine hits and striking out three. He earned the first win of his varsity career. Isaiah Martinez and Sean Ruhf combined to finish the last three innings, allowing only two hits and one run in the final three innings of the game. Martinez is credited with the hold while Ruhf picked up his second save of the season.

Junior Brayden Snyder led the Dutch at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double, walk, and a run scored. Senior Andon Grigg had two hits and two RBIs, while Zach Hop and Sean Ruhf had a hit with two RBIs as well. Carson Van Hekken, Mateo Clawson, Ryan Duff, and Emmett Book also added hits to the total for the Dutch.

The Dutch improved to 12-9 on the season and remain 9-6 in conference play.

BASEBALL

Zeeland East 11, Holland Christan 7

Zeeland East traveled to Holland Christian for a non-league single game on Friday afternoon, the Chix defeated the Maroons by a score of 11-7.

Holland Christian jumped out to an early 7-1 lead through three innings after scoring five runs with no outs in the first inning. Zeeland East answered to tie the game at seven after a big 6-run fouth inning. Zeeland East tallied two more in each the fifth and sixth inning to secure the victory.

Jake Meyering records the win on the mound for Zeeland East. Meyering pitched seven full innings of relief after coming in to the game in the first inning. Meyering allowed two runs on five hits, while striking out five.

Offensively the Chix were led by Trevor Raade who had three hits (one triple), two runs scored and two RBI. Austin Keur and Noah Ledford each chipped in with two hits while Brenston Brown added a two RBI double. Jace Fenlon and Aidan Jaworowski each scored three runs in the game.

Zeeland East improves to 17-7 on the year and host Zeeland West for a double-header on Tuesday.

SOFTBALL

Jenison 6, Zeeland West 5

Zeeland West lost the lead late in a 6-5 loss to Jenison on Friday. That completed the sweep of the Dux in the series.

Dux opened up scoring in the first inning, when Taylor Zwagerman singled on a 3-2 count, scoring one run.

Dux notched four more runs in the second inning. The bats in the inning were led by a groundout by Emily Kragt and a double by Carly Sleeman.

Emily Brands took the loss for the Dux. She surrendered six runs on eight hits over five innings, striking out two and walking one.

"Emily pitched a solid game. She had control, but Jension is a very good hitting team" said coach Scott Sliva. "Proud of the three pitchers we threw tonight. It was good for our team growth".

The Dux had six hits in the game. Zwagerman and Sleeman each collected multiple hits. Zwagerman went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead Zeeland West Dux Varsity in hits.

The Dux fall to 13-8 on the season. They play next at Zeeland East in OK Green Conference play on Tuesday.

WATER POLO

Zeeland 17, West Ottawa 7

The Zeeland water polo team qualified for the Regional Tournament on Friday evening by defeating rival West Ottawa 17-7 in the first game of the District Tournament.

Aby Brinks led all scorers with seven goals and Goalie Emily Pifer recorded 10 saves in goal. Zeeland jumped out to a 6-1 lead after the first and a 10-3 lead at the half. Next up, Zeeland will play No. 1 ranked Hudsonville at 8 a.m. Saturday. All District Games are being played at the Zeeland West Natatorium.

In addition to Brinks's goals, Rylee Brown added three, Katelyn Inman and Olivia Hamilton each had two, Morgan Selles and Aerolyn Posthumus also added one apiece.

"We had a game plan going into the game and the team followed it perfectly," said coach Dave Vruggink, "We have a few more big games tomorrow to help seed us for the Regional Tournament next weekend."

BOYS GOLF

Holland Christian takes second, Hamilton finishes fourth at OK Blue Jamboree

HC Varsity Boys shoot a season-low team score of 156 to finish second in the seventh OK Blue Conference Jamboree at Western Greens. The Maroons were led by superb rounds of 2-over-par 38 from Oliver VandenBerg and Cade VandenBosch. Oliver and Cade each made two birdies in their rounds. Adam Kroeze birdied two of his final three holes to fire a 39, and Michael Pierce added a solid 41.

Hamilton tied for fourth place at the conference jamboree. Eli Timmerman led the Hawkeyes with an even-par 36. Riley Johr shot a 37, Ben Boehm ended with a 39, and Gavin Baker rounded out the Hawkeyes with a 46.

TRACK

Poulton shines at Gobles invite

Black River's Kylee Poulton won the 100 meters (12.18), andthe 200 in a school-record 24.85, which is is the top time in Division 3 this season. She also was part of a school-record winning 4x400 (4:28.71).

Atif Usmani finished in the 400 with a time of 53.88.

Nolan Meier finished second in the 3,200 with a time of 10:13.19.
