Hollyoaks is set to air disturbing scenes in Carter Shepherd and Lucas Hay's ongoing storyline, with a new character joining the soap.

In recent weeks, Carter has been trying to convince Lucas to take part in his church's dangerous 'conversion therapy' because of the teen's feelings for friend Dillon Ray.

In scenes to air next week, a joke made at Lucas’ expense about his sexuality will rattle him during a pre-game pep talk.

Lucas will eventually fall out with JJ when he decides to prove the other lads wrong by asking Frankie out for dinner.

Later, he tells Dillon about his dad’s relapse but when it looks like they are about to kiss, Scott walks in. Lucas ends up running off before anything else can happen.

Scott tries to talk to Lucas about his feelings for Dillon and shares some advice from his past experiences.

At the school, Scott arrives to see John Paul, and when Lucas sees him, he asks for advice on how to how to proceed when you want more than friendship with someone you're close to.

Carter senses Lucas may be slipping away so he interrupts a heart-to-heart between the teen and Dillon. Once Carter has Lucas alone, he tells him he heard his conversation with Scott and encourages him to make 'better choices' in his life.

Carter ultimately takes Lucas to meet new character Declan Hawthorne at the church. Lucas is immediately on the back-foot when Declan questions Ste and James' marriage and Lucas's own relationship with Dillon.

Lucas tries to make up for his recent outbursts by cleaning the house, before apologising to Ste for trashing the youth centre.

Back at school, Lucas gets made captain of the football team by Carter, which only causes more problems with JJ.

Carter continues trying to manipulate Lucas by suggesting he get to know Frankie. Later, Dillon asks a conflicted Lucas if he wants to do something to celebrate him becoming football captain.

Newcomer Declan Hawthorne will be played by Alan Turkington, whose casting was announced earlier this month.

Speaking exclusively to Digital Spy about the role, Alan said: "I'm absolutely thrilled to be joining the Hollyoaks family, who have made me feel so welcome – even as a very unwelcome character!

"We've already filmed some incredibly intense scenes, including those in Declan's first episode. He's a toxically religious man who fervently believes in the therapy he is advocating. He feels that these men have lost their way, when really it's he who has 'strayed from the righteous path'."

Hollyoaks streams first online via Channel 4 each weekday at 7.30pm. Episodes then air on E4 the following day, before getting their YouTube premiere a week after that.

Selected omnibus episodes are available via Prime Video.
