Hollyoaks has confirmed details of Holby City star David Ames' role on the show.

Ames will be playing the character Carter Shepherd, the new head of Hollyoaks High, taking over the job from Sally St Claire and Nancy Osborne. He is also the father of Freya Calder, and is moving to the village in hopes of building a relationship with her.

"I am incredibly excited to join the Hollyoaks cast as such an intricately layered character with a very poignant and vital storyline to come," Ames said in a statement.

Ames is best known for his role as Dominic Copeland on the BBC medical soap, appearing more recently as George in Channel 5 drama The Madame Blanc Mysteries.

The storyline will also see the return of Ellie Henry as Freya, who first appeared in the village last year.

"I am absolutely thrilled to be returning to Hollyoaks! Last year saw a lot of life changing events for Freya," Henry said.

"She is now navigating life as a disabled young person without her mum, which gives us so much to explore. She's also had a little transformation in the time she’s been away, which is exciting," she added.

"We have so much coming up this year that I cannot wait for people to see!"

Fans will remember that Freya was involved in John Paul McQueen's minibus crash storyline, suffering life-changing injuries as a result of the accident.

Following the crash, Freya's mum – police officer Lexi Calder –began tormenting John Paul and his family for his role in the accident.

Lexi would later be killed off by serial killer Silas Blisset in his dramatic final showdown with the McQueens.

Hollyoaks streams first online via Channel 4, with new episodes dropping each weekday morning. The show airs Mondays to Fridays at 6.30pm on Channel 4, and at 7pm on E4.

Selected omnibus episodes are available via Prime Video.
