Hollyoaks has confirmed Martine Deveraux's breast cancer diagnosis in Thursday's first-look episode.

The soap has shown the process of Martine discovering her condition as part of a storyline exploring unconscious bias that people of colour face in everyday situations – including awaiting medical results.

Martine has been waiting for weeks to find out whether she has breast cancer after an abnormality was found in her scan. In the newest episode, she was finally due to have a consultation at the hospital.

On her way, Martine brushed off Felix's words of support, but ended up being accompanied to her appointment by rival Grace Black in spite of their differences.

"Hey, you got this," Grace encouraged Martine before the consultation.

The next time viewers saw Martine, she was arriving back at The Hutch – but she was interrupted from telling Celeste about about the appointment by the news that she'd won Businesswoman of the Year.

While the Deverauxs tried to celebrate with a dance party, Martine could only relish in the news for so long before coming clean to her loved ones.

"I've been putting on a brave face all day, but I've got breast cancer," she explained.

Martine ordered Toby and Celeste not to tell Felix anything about her diagnosis, despite the fact that she knew he'd rally to support her.

"That's exactly why I don't want anyone to know," she insisted. "I'm about to start a long and arduous journey, and I don't want anyone's sympathy. This stays between us."

Will Toby, Celeste and Walter follow Martine's request?

Hollyoaks currently airs new episodes from Mondays to Fridays at 6.30pm on Channel 4, with first look screenings at 7pm on E4.
