Hollyoaks star Ellie Henry feels her on-screen parents have helped her to become a better actor.

Ellie joined the long-running soap early last year as Freya Calder, a Hollyoaks High School student.

Shortly after arriving on the scene, a bus crash left her with life-altering injuries.

The young star has spoken about how having soap veterans as on-screen parents helped her feel at ease as a soap newbie.

Holby City's Dominic Copeland actor David Ames will soon arrive on the show as Carter Shepherd, Freya's father, and former Emmerdale star Natalie Anderson played her mother, Lexi Calder.

"I couldn't have asked for better on-screen parents," she told Inside Soap.

"I was fresh to the TV world when I first came in, and Natalie helped me so much. I'm still in contact with her, and I'm so lucky to have her as my guide."

Natalie left the soap last September when her character, undercover police officer D.S. Lexi Calder, was killed by serial killer Silas Blissett.

She continued: "The casting team have absolutely pulled it out of the bag with David.

"I've seen him in Holby City, and I know he's good. Working with him on set has just been phenomenal, our brains work in a similar way. He's made me a better actor already."

Carter is also the new head of Hollyoaks High, taking over the job from Sally St Claire and Nancy Osborne.

He moves to the village hoping to build a relationship with his daughter Freya.

During the interview, she mentioned how important it was for her character to use a wheelchair, as she does in everyday life, to help showcase representation on TV.

She said: "I didn't think my dream career was achievable – I thought that was gone for me. But hopefully if a young person sees me living my life, they can find some confidence and believe that anything can happen. I'm really listened to at work in terms of 'Would Freya do that?' or, "How should we phrase this?'

"It's a creative partnership, and there's a lot coming up for Freya. The audience need to buckle themselves in!"

Hollyoaks streams first online via Channel 4, with new episodes dropping each weekday morning. The show airs Mondays to Fridays at 6.30pm on Channel 4, and at 7pm on E4.

Selected omnibus episodes are available via Prime Video.
