Jamelia has spoken out about reprising her role as Sharon Bailey in Hollyoaks — and about how she was actually the one who suggested the character should return.

The Loose Women host and singer first joined the soap in 2021 as part of a special episode for Channel 4's Black to Front Project, highlighting Black talent in front and behind the camera.

Sharon, who's a pediatrician at Dee Valley University Hospital and the daughter of Pearl Anderson, announced her return to the soap full-time earlier this month.

Speaking at The Royal Television Society Programme Awards, the "Superstar" hitmaker praised the cast and crew of the popular soap following her return.

"I actually had a cameo role back in October of 2021 and, a little-known fact, I was actually on it back in 2000 playing myself when I was performing at the student union bar, but it was that experience in October 2021 that I just loved it so much," she revealed to MailOnline.

"I got a bit brave and said, 'Listen, if you want Dr Sharon to come back, I would love to,' and I let them know and made it very, very clear that I just had the most amazing time."

She went on to say that when she was offered a contract for the show last April, she "jumped at the chance" and has been "having the time of [her] life" since her return.

"Everyone is so friendly and so welcoming. From people like Richard [Blackwood] and then you've got people like Jennifer [Metcalfe], Alex Fletcher, Nikki Sanderson, they've all just been so lovely and so welcoming. I just feel like I've always been there," she continued.

"It's a true testament to them as people, and the cast and crew, the fact that they treat people like that just makes it an amazing environment to work in so I have no complaints and if you know me, you know I love a complaint!"

Hollyoaks streams first on All 4, with new episodes dropping each weekday morning. The show airs Mondays to Fridays at 6.30pm on Channel 4, and at 7pm on E4.

Selected omnibus episodes are available via Prime Video.
