Hollyoaks spoilers follow.

Hollyoaks aired a surprising twist for John Paul McQueen tonight (November 3) after he teamed up with James Nightingale in a bid to uncover the identity of his family's blackmailer.

Recent weeks have seen the McQueen family targeted by a macabre doll that's been blackmailing the family over their 'Seven Deadly Sins' and demanding huge amounts of money from them if they want to keep their secrets safe.

While viewers know that serial killer Silas Blissett is the one who's behind everything – and that he also has a mystery associate – the McQueens are still none the wiser, and in Tuesday's E4 first-look episode John Paul (James Sutton) set out on a mission to find out the truth.

With both Sylver and Theresa having already had to face up to their own past indiscretions, a desperate Theresa tried to destroy the doll in tonight's episode in a bid to draw the blackmailer out, but John Paul had a different plan in mind.

Determined to catch the blackmailer in the act, John Paul went to James Nightingale (Gregory Finnegan) for help and the two came up with a plan, deciding to leave a bag at The Folly for the blackmailer to collect, and find out who's out to get the McQueens by sticking around to see who turns up.

With the plan set, John Paul and James headed out to put in motion. But John Paul's decision to turn to James for help ended up infuriating his boyfriend George Kiss (Callum Kerr) after cancelling their date for 'work reasons', only for George to later spot John Paul leaving James' flat.

Unaware that George knows he's been lying, John Paul and James headed to The Folly to carry out their plan and wait for the blackmailer to show up and collect the money.

"This is ridiculous," John Paul remarked from his and James' hiding place in the bushes. "No one's going to fall for this."

But James quickly shushed him as he heard steps approaching, and the two were left horrified when none other than George Kiss turned up and picked up the bag.

Does this mean that George is working with Silas to bring the McQueen family down?

Unfortunately for the McQueens, John Paul and James' latest shock won't actually bring an end to the torment.

Spoilers for next week's episodes confirm that not only is the blackmail plot still ongoing, but it's also John Paul's turn to face up to a dark secret from his past.

What has John Paul been hiding?
