Toby Faroe has accidentally confessed to murdering his cousin Lisa Loveday in front of girlfriend Cleo McQueen in shock Hollyoaks scenes.

The last viewers saw, Toby had cornered Cleo's abuser Pete in one of the alleys, and later there was blood splatter on the Secret Garden book he'd been carrying.

In the opening on Wednesday's (April 7) E4 episode, DS Cohen (Ariana Fraval) stopped by The Dog to ask whether Pete had broken his parole by visiting them — but Toby (Bobby Gordon) jumped in to insist they hadn't seen him.

Once DS Cohen asked them to get in touch if anything changed, Cleo (Nadine Mulkerrin) was left with one big burning question for her boyfriend.

"Why did we just lie to her, and why is there blood on Pete's book?" she demanded to know.

Cleo ultimately stormed out when Toby had to confess that he'd lied about having "a scuffle" with Pete when he'd previously denied there had been any violence.

As she walked along the outskirts of the village, she found Pete propped up against the wall. Perhaps because of her responsibility as a nurse, she got him some medical supplies for his injuries — but fired back when Pete insisted he'd come to Hollyoaks to win her back.

"You're wrong. I never ever loved you," she insisted. "I have an amazing life here, and I have a boyfriend. I never, ever want to see you again!"

Pete then showed Cleo that Toby had allegedly carved the word 'PREDATOR' into his arm, insisting he'd never come back because he didn't want to encounter the "twisted psychopath" again.

Cleo would confront Toby later in car park, where he insisted he'd regretted lying but not what he'd done to Pete. When he asked for forgiveness, Cleo simply walked away in disappointment.

It was a talk with Walter about the Bible's writings on forgiveness that finally convinced her to make things right with her boyfriend.

Later, she tried to explain to Felix that she wanted "a normal relationship" with him without the intensity. Her hopes for a quiet life didn't last long, when she overheard Toby having a nightmare about killing Lisa Loveday.

"I didn't mean to kill her, I didn't," he mumbled in his sleep.

Cleo was left confused about what she'd overheard as the episode came to a close.
