Holt girls, Lansing Catholic boys capture bowling state championships

Lola Knox had a team-high score in the championship match while helping the Holt girls bowling team capture the Division 1 state championship on Friday.

Holt had a total pinfall of 1,197 in the title match to beat Traverse City West in the final at Thunderbowl Lanes in Allen Park. Traverse City West finished with 1,076 pins.

The state championship was Holt's first since 2010.

Knox rolled a high game of 214 during the singles portion of match play for the Rams, whose five bowlers combined for a score of 919. Holt finished 109 pins better than Traverse City West in that portion with Madison Rue rolling a game of 187 and Alissa Van Horn adding a 183. Emma Cadwell rolled a 173 and Ava Seyfried a 162 for the Rams.

Holt trailed by 18 pins following the first baker game before bouncing back in the second. The Rams outscored Traverse City West 157-129 in the second baker game to take an edge into the singles portion.

Holt got to match play of the state finals by finishing fourth in team qualifying with a total pin fall of 3,115.

The Rams beat No. 5 seed Macomb Dakota 1,245-1,195 in the match play quarterfinal and then No. 8 seed Westland John Glenn by 12 pins in the semifinal.

DIVISION 2

Charlotte and Mason each advanced to match play before having their runs ended at the state finals at Century Lanes in Waterford.

Charlotte reached the semifinals after earning the final spot in qualifying. The No. 8 seed Orioles edged Flint Kearsley by six pins in the quarterfinal thanks to strong baker games before falling to Sparta 1,164 to 1,098 in the semis.

Mason had the second-best pin total during qualifying to earn the No. 2 seed. The Bulldogs led after the two baker games before No. 7 seed Carleton Airport dominated in the singles portion to record the 1,160-1,026 quarterfinal win.

DIVISION 3

Olivet finished ninth at the state finals at JAX 60 in Jackson. The Eagles finished just 31 pins shy of reaching match play and had a pins total of 2,763.

BOYS

DIVISION 3

The Lansing Catholic boys bowling team captured its first state championship by knocking off Ogemaw Heights in the match play championship match at JAX 60 in Jackson.

The Cougars had a total pinfall of 1,239 to beat Ogemaw Heights by 26 pins.

Lansing Catholic built its advantage in the final with strong baker games. The Cougars had the top score in both and took a 368-329 edge entering the singles potion. That advantage proved to be enough for the Cougars despite being outscored by 16 pins in the individual portion.

Jeff Wheeler had a team-high score of 199 during the title match, while Charlie Gates rolled a 179 and Ethan Wolcott a 171 in the final for Lansing Catholic. The Cougars also got games of 164 from James Wheeler and 158 from Jack Hernly.

Danny Gassman rolled a 198 to lead runner-up Ogemaw Heights in the singles portion.

Lansing Catholic had the third-best pins total during qualifying. The Cougars beat No. 6 seed Yale, 1,245-1,077 in the match play quarterfinal and then No. 2 seed Gladwin by 23 pins in the semifinal.

Portland also reached the state final and finished 14th in qualifying.

DIVISION 2

DeWitt finished 10th and Mason was 11th at the state finals at Century Lanes in Waterford. DeWitt had pinfall total of 3,237 in qualifying, while Mason had 3,211. DeWitt finished 16 pin shy of the eighth and final spot for match play.

DIVISION 4

Fowler finished 17th at the state finals at M-66 Bowl in Battle Creek. The Eagles knocked down 2,698 pins in qualifying.
