Holy Cross, Whitefield Academy to meet as girls All 'A' Classic tips off Wednesday

The All “A” Classic girls basketball tournament will tip off Wednesday and include an all-Louisville matchup in the first round.

Sixth Region champion Holy Cross (10-8) will meet Seventh Region titlist Whitefield Academy (16-5) at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Eastern Kentucky University’s McBrayer Arena in Richmond.

Holy Cross is in the event for the third time in four years. The Cougars won the Sixth Region title when Portland Christian had to bow out of the final on Jan. 14 because of COVID-19 protocols.

Senior Callie Wiegandt (16.6 ppg) leads the Cougars.

Whitefield Academy reached last year’s All “A” quarterfinals before falling to eventual champion Bethlehem. The Wildcats cruised through last month’s Seventh Region Tournament, beating Kentucky Country Day 70-11 in the final on Jan. 13.

Whitefield has four players scoring in double figures - juniors Camryn Poole (15.2 ppg) and Amy Thompson (12.9 ppg) and sophomores Allison Spieker (15.1 ppg), and Sara Ritter (12.3 ppg).

Top teams in the field include 15th Region champion Pikeville (17-1) and Third Region winner Owensboro Catholic (15-6).

All “A” events are limited to the state’s smallest 125 high schools, based on enrollments in grades 9-12.

Wednesday – Carlisle County (13-4) vs. Owen County (14-6), 8:30 a.m.; Cumberland County (12-7) vs. Jackson County (14-4), 10 a.m.; Covington Holy Cross (13-8) vs. Paris (12-5), 11:30 a.m.; Lyon County (11-9) vs. Campbellsville (11-9), 1 p.m.; Owensboro Catholic (15-6) vs. Berea (16-2), 5 p.m.; Louisville Holy Cross (10-8) vs. Whitefield Academy (16-5), 6:30 p.m.; West Carter (15-4) vs. Knott County Central (13-6), 8 p.m.; Danville Christian (15-3) vs. Pikeville (17-1), 9:30 p.m.

Friday – Quarterfinals at 8:30, 10 and 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Saturday – Semifinals at noon and 1:30 p.m.

Sunday – Final at noon
