‘Holy Toledo!’ Curious bear seen poking head into open car window near Smoky Mountains

A woman got an unexpected visitor to her car window while sitting outside a Tennessee restaurant Saturday, Aug. 13.

As Cindy Kitts waited outside a restaurant in Gatlinburg, a black bear poked its head through her open passenger side window, she wrote in a Facebook post.

“The next thing I know, I look over and here he is in the window and I’m like, ‘Oh, hi,’” Kitts told WATE.

The woman said she remained “very quiet and calm.” According to her Facebook post, there was no food in her car and the bear left just as quickly as it came — but not before she snapped a few photos.

“It’s something I won’t forget. I just thought to myself I will never have an opportunity like that pop up again, literally pop up again,” Kitts told WATE.

Though this woman’s encounter was memorable, the National Park Service warns that bear encounters should be taken seriously and can be unpredictable. You should never approach a bear or allow them to approach you, the park service’s website says.

“Although extremely rare, attacks on humans have occurred, inflicting serious injuries and death. Treat bear encounters with extreme caution,” says the National Park Service’s bear encounter advice page.

Gatlinburg is about 35 miles southeast of Knoxville. It borders the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, where about 1,500 bears live, according to the park website.
