Home and Away spoilers follow for Australian and UK viewers.

Home and Away has added a new police officer to the cast ahead of its tragic death storyline.

Earlier this week, the Aussie soap revealed that one of four Summer Bay residents would soon be found dead in the sea, with Leah Patterson-Baker, Justin Morgan, Mackenzie Booth and Susie McAllister all in danger.

With the drama set to unfold over the coming days in Australia, and in July in the UK, Home and Away has cast military veteran Nicholas Cartwright as Senior Constable Cash Newman.

Cartwright, who served in the Australian Army for six years, has admitted that he has "zero television experience" but is well-suited for the role thanks to his real-life experiences.

"I think it really helps having a military background and understanding of rank and things like that to go into a position like this," he told PerthNow.

"You can kind of feel a little lost when you get out of the defence force, and no-one wants to do a normal job. So I thought, 'What's the craziest thing I can do?' and decided to go to the [National Institute of Dramatic Art]."

While at NIDA, Nicholas met Home and Away star Ethan Browne – who plays Tane Parata – so the army officer-turned-actor has already been briefed on taking his shirt off.

"I remember having a laugh with Ethan when he first got on the show because as soon as you're working, they're throwing you out topless," he joked.

Senior Constable Cash Newman will be thrown into the deep end when he arrives in Summer Bay in upcoming episodes, as he's tasked with arresting Justin Morgan – only for a body to wash up on shore shortly after.

Home and Away airs weekdays at 1.15pm and 6pm on Channel 5 (UK), with first look screenings at 6.30pm on 5STAR. Selected classic episodes are available via Amazon Prime Video in the UK.
