Ambridge event showcases home brews & homemade wine

AMBRIDGE − Homebrewed beer and homemade wine will be the stars of a Saturday event at Old Economy Village.

The 12th Annual Crush & Brew beer tasting and competition lets home brewers and vintners to show off their skills.

This year, it also will host food trucks Coop Chicken and Waffles, Big Creek BBQ and Little Nicky’s Pizza and feature live musical performances by Mean Blue Planets and James Tobin and the Dewey Decimators.

The ticket price includes a $10 voucher for purchases at the food trucks; a souvenir event tasting glass for sampling the competitors’ beer and wine; and admittance to private after-parties at Altered Genius Brewing Co. and Fermata Brewing Co., both on Merchant Street in Ambridge.

Tickets will be $35 at the gate (Church Street entrance) on the day of the event.

The Ambridge Historic District Economic Development Corp. plans to use the money raised by the event to purchase and install banners welcoming visitors to the district and fund an ongoing project to renovate the oldest Harmonist house in Old Economy in time for the village's 2024 bicentennial celebration.

Old Economy Village was founded in 1824 by The Harmonist Society, a German religious group. It encompasses 13 city blocks in Ambridge and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Crush & Brew's beer judging will be done by Altered Genius and Fermata Brewing. Wine will be judged by Kevin Ostrowski, president of the Beaver County Chapter of the American Wine Society.

Prizes include commercial production of the winning brew recipe, with additional Perks from Altered Genius and Fermata. Winemakers will be invited to a tasting at the local chapter of the American Wine Society. Other prizes for brewers and vintners include gift cards for wine and beer production sponsored by More Flavor in Ambridge.
