Home built by Sartell High School students moved to lot

A house built by Sartell High School students this year for Central Minnesota Habitat for Humanity was moved to its lot Friday morning.

The six-bedroom, three-bathroom house is being constructed by students in the Sartell High School Construction (SabreCON) program in collaboration with Central Minnesota Habitat for Humanity.

St. Cloud Financial Credit Union assisted with funding the project. The lot on First Avenue North in Sartell was donated by Ryan and Bethany Cross, co-owners of BCI Construction.

"For a first-year home build, it's always a little challenging" Chad Johnson, CMHFH executive director, told the Times. "But it was a great opportunity." Johnson worked with his former high school teacher who headed the SabreCon program, Joe Schulte.

"It's a cool learning process for these kids," he said. He also shared some envy for the students who participated in the program. "Back when I was in high school, the closest thing we did to this was building birdhouses."

CMHFH, in partnership with St. Cloud Technical and Community College, will have some of the technical college's students take care of the plumbing, electrical work and roofing of the house.

For nearly a decade, CMHFH has had similar projects with ROCORI High School and St. Cloud Tech High School with homes successfully built and moved. This year was Sartell's first home build. SabreCON 2 is set to start this September for Sartell students.
