Home collapses into basement during fire in Bassett, investigation underway

BASSETT, Va. (WFXR) — A house is a total loss after it collapsed into the basement during a fire early Monday morning.

On May 6 around 2:30 a.m., firefighters in Bassett were called to a home on Deerfield Lane. Several first responders with the Patrick Henry Fire, Bassett Fire, and the Henry County Department of Public Safety responded to the scene.

Firefighters told WFXR News the owner of the property, who lived nearby, called the fire in and originally thought someone was lighting fireworks.

When crews arrived, they discovered the house had collapsed into the basement.

Firefighters used water and foam to contain the blaze and worked on the scene for over an hour.

Fire officials confirmed no one lived in the house and there were no reported injuries.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Henry County Fire Marshal.
