New Home, New Deal players named to TSWA Class 2A all-state baseball first team

Following a run to the state semifinals, New Home boasted three first-teamers to lead a total of six players on the Texas Sports Writers Association Class 2A all-state baseball teams, which were released Tuesday.

New Deal's Harley Patterson joined the Leopards' Logan Addison, Brody Emert and Ashton Lucio on the first team. Patterson and Lucio were selected as an outfielders, while Addison and Emert were picked at third baseman and first baseman, respectively.

New Home finished 33-4 following a semifinal loss to eventual champion Valley Mills, which also had three on the all-state first team.

Lockney outfielder Nathan Ceniceros made the second team, while New Home's Zach Blizel (pitcher) and Hunter Watkins (outfielder) landed on the third team. Leopards outfielder Jackson Raines was honorable mention, along with New Deal's Noah Rodriguez (catcher) and Jordan Aubrey (outfielder) and Ropes shortstop Kaden Bryan.

Valley Mills' Doug Shanafelt was voted coach of the year, and Shiner pitcher Ryan Peterson was player of the year. Peterson led the Comanches to the state final, posting a 14-0 record with a 0.53 earned-run average and 151 strikeouts in 79 innings. The junior also hit .541 with 38 RBI, 65 runs and 38 stolen bases.

Valley Mills (30-2-2) handed Shiner its only loss with a 4-2 decision in the state championship.
