Home Depot, the largest home improvement retailer in the United States selling tools, appliances and materials for construction projects, is ready to help you overthrow the English army of 1298 A.D.

Some online shoppers this week were surprised to learn the retail giant offers a 40-inch sword modeled after the weapon swung by actor Mel Gibson in the 1995 movie, "Braveheart."

"Reclaim your FREEDOM from the tyrannical English king with this authentic William Wallace sword," reads the item's description on HomeDepot.com, adding the stainless steel blade comes with an authentic leather sheath that can attach to your belt.

The real William Wallace fought (and lost) against King Edward I during the Battle of Falkirk. And while Home Depot is 700 years too late to aid the Scottish, online users are here for it.

'Is this affective in slaying vampires?' Online shoppers had questions for Home Depot about its swords

Questions posed by online customers to Home Depot about its medieval weaponry have included these gems:

  • "Is this sword suitable for overthrowing an oppressive English monarchy?"

  • "I have a large fire breathing dragon in my yard that I need to slay. Will this work or should I hire an exterminator?"

  • "Can I use this to create a sword bouquet for my wedding? You know, in case a hoard of orcs decides to crash it or something..."

  • "Is this affective in slaying vampires?"

  • "Is this sword sharp and sturdy enough to carry into battle, or is it just suitable for a bit of light pillaging?"

Meant for decoration, the sword is available for online purchase only. Or at least not until Home Depot starts offering catapults and other siege equipment next to its lumber aisle. They're not the only big box store selling medieval-style weapons, either.

A 41" stainless steel sword, the "Templar Crusader" is available through Walmart.com. A Roman-style Centurion sword, as well as a tactical survival spear, can be picked up at Academy Sports and Outdoors.

Well... what do the reviews say?

Reviews for the "William Wallace" sword have faired mostly positive, but only one so far has come from a verified purchaser: "I was surprised when my 15-year-old son came to me wanting me to buy him a sword from Home Depot… both because I had hoped he was joking about wanting his own sword, and because I had no idea Home Depot sold them..."

Everyone else brought the jokes.

  • "My lawn gnome is now my loyal squire. Home Depot's Stainless Steel William Wallace Sword transformed my mundane chores into epic quests... Ask the cashier about the dragon repellent warranty."

  • "Freedom! Used this against my lord of land and no longer (have) to pay my due... for this month."

  • "Very effective against landlords. Way better investment than rent."

  • "This piece of steel saved my life when I found myself in 1300 A.D."

And, of course, if you don't fancy buying yourself a sword, Home Depot carries battleaxes, too.
