Clea Shearer and Joanna Teplin, the masterminds behind the Home Edit, know a thing or two about organization. Their organizational projects run the gamut from Khloé Kardashian’s pantry to Mandy Moore’s closet to Olivia Culpo’s bathroom—all of which feature aesthetically pleasing rows of neatly organized bins, stackable storage, and a healthy dose of color coordination.
Shearer and Teplin, who recently launched a partnership with Capital One, call the kitchen and pantry the “Grand Central of the home.” Because these are some of the home’s most high-use spaces, they easily become disorganized. ELLE Decor: What’s the best piece of advice you can give to someone who is too overwhelmed to start organizing their kitchen?
Teplin: Start really small. Start with a drawer. A drawer is a great way to see the process through from A to Z. Once you understand how to do the process, you can extrapolate. Plus, if you focus on one small, isolated area, it’s more manageable.
What are the top products you recommend for home organization?
Shearer: Pantries are the perfect place to blend products: bins for large groupings, canisters, and turntables for the corners. The smaller the space, the more meticulous it tends to be.
What’s the best system for organizing a pantry?
Teplin: We get asked that a lot, and there’s no one-size-fits-all answer. In a pantry, the category is more important that the color. Think: dinner, lunch, breakfast, baking, sweets, snacks.
Once you get everything organized, how do you keep it that way?
Teplin: Maintenance is the key. Once you have the systems in place, it’s plug and play. I would love for people to go through their things as often as we do, but if they can commit to cleaning the pantry out even just once a quarter, that’s really helpful.
How would you describe your signature aesthetic?
Shearer: We always like to say that we start from a place of function and then make it as beautiful as possible—but you have to start with smart systems.
