Homeless man found dead in Central Park with rope around his neck last year was murdered: NYPD

A 26-year-old homeless man found dead in Central Park nearly a year ago with a rope around his neck was murdered, police said Friday.

The city medical examiner concluded that victim Elvis Garcia could not have tied the knot around his neck himself, police said.

A woman gardening in the park’s meadow at E. 65th St. and East Drive came upon Garcia the morning of Sept. 22.

Police at the time said the rope appeared similar to what is used to cordon off crowds at an event. There was nothing to indicate Garcia had been involved in a confrontation prior to this death, police had said, nor was there enough evidence to conclude Garcia killed himself.

The medical examiner concluded Garcia died of asphyxia due strangulation and said he was the victim of a homicide.

Garcia, who had a history of mental illness, was known by police to sleep in the park. Police do not have a a description of the suspect.
