Homeless teen receives more than $3 million in college scholarships

A homeless high school student in Memphis has gone from rags to riches — in a sense — after he received more than $3 million in college scholarships, WHBQ reports.

Tupac Mosley, 17, and his family were evicted out of their home in February after his father passed and they fell behind on their bills, the teenager said. In the following months, he moved from house to house before settling at For the Kingdom, a camp and retreat center that caters to Memphis' youth.

Despite regularly relocating, Mosley maintained a 4.3 GPA at Raleigh Egypt High School, earning him the title of valedictorian. His accomplishments, however, don't end there.

The teenager was accepted to more than 40 colleges and learned just before graduation that he landed over 50 scholarships that totaled more than $3 million in prize money.

"When I heard that I got $3 million, I was more than elated and excited and astonished that it was that much," he told WHBQ.

During his graduation speech on Sunday, Mosley told his peers that his experience is proof that they too can aim high as long as they put in the work.

"Never let your current situation, whatever circumstances you’re going through, be a mountain that you can’t climb," he said.

Mosley also made sure to thank his principal and teachers for supporting him.

"I knew that I had to make them proud. I knew that their investment was worth it and just show them that – yes, everything that you poured into me was worth $3 million and counting," he said.

Mosley will attend Tennessee State University this fall and plans to major in electrical engineering. The teenager will also move into a permanent home with his family.
