SCITUATE − At least three beachfront homes were destroyed and two others seriously damaged in a Friday night fire that quickly spread along Glades Road in Minot Beach.

The fire started just after 7:30 p.m. Friday, Scituate Fire Chief John Murphy told WCVB, The Patriot Ledger's media partner. Three homes were already on fire when first responders arrived, he said, and flames spread to two more before firefighters could contain the blaze.

"We're very fortunate we didn't have a lot of wind tonight," Murphy said Friday. "We probably lost five homes tonight, but the first three are total losses and the other two have extensive damage."

Some of the homes were occupied, the chief said, but everyone was evacuated and no injuries were reported. Murphy said the cause of the fire is still unknown and under investigation by the state fire marshal.

Eight different communities − including Hanover, Duxbury, Hull, Rockland, Plymouth and Hanson − helped battle the flames.

"We're very fortunate nobody got hurt. All the homeowners have been contacted by the Red Cross to make sure they have a place to stay if needed," Murphy said.

Scituate police said area residents should expect potential power outages and water-related issues as a result of the fire.

"There are really no words for it," Samantha Rubenstein, a lifelong resident of the neighborhood, told WCVB. "It's really tragic to see all of these beautiful houses up in flames. It's one thing to have the storms come in and the destruction from the storms, but it's another to have something like this happen."
