Homicide investigation: Coroner identifies two men found dead in Evansville home

EVANSVILLE — The Vanderburgh County Coroner's Office released the names of two men who were found dead inside a home on Evansville's West Side Sunday afternoon.

In a news release published Wednesday morning, Chief Deputy Coroner David Anson identified the men as 31-year-old Michael Blankenship Jr., of Evansville, and 37-year-old Mitchell Greathouse, of Newburgh.

The Evansville Police Department began conducting what a spokesperson described as a "murder investigation" after a man called 911 Sunday to report that he had found Blankenship and Greathouse inside a home in the 2600 block of Mt. Vernon Avenue.

Anson said the EPD was investigating both deaths as homicides.

"Autopsy examinations were conducted on Michael Blankenship Jr. and Mitchell Kent Greathouse on (Tuesday)," Anson wrote in a news release. "Preliminary results are pending toxicology and the final autopsy report."

Officers were dispatched to the Mt. Vernon Avenue home at 3:30 p.m. Sunday. The man who dialed 911 to report both men's deaths described one of them as his "best friend."

"They're both dead," the man told a 911 dispatcher. "They're beyond help."

Officers soon entered the home and confirmed Blankenship and Greathouse were deceased. The initial police report identified a related weapon as a "firearm — type not stated."

As of Wednesday morning, no arrests had been made in connection with Blankenship and Greathouse's deaths. The police have not publicly named any persons of interest or potential suspects.

The EPD asks anyone with information regarding the homicide investigation to contact its Adult Investigations Unit at 812-436-7979.
