Honesdale Biddy Basketball Association teams jockeying for playoff position

HONESDALE — With the 2022-23 campaign now officially at the halfway point, Honesdale Biddy Basketball Association teams are laser-focused on qualifying for the post season tournament.

The Falcons and Cavaliers are currently tied for first place in the Junior Division standings with identical 4-0 records, while the Rockets are lurking just a game back.

Meanwhile, the Bulls Cardinals and Frogs find themselves in a three-way logjam atop the Senior Division rankings at 3-1.

“It's exciting to have so many players, cheerleaders, volunteers and families involved in Biddy once again,” said league spokesman AG Howell.

“The games are fun, entertaining and a great learning experience for everyone. All our youth sports leagues are a strong part of our close-knit community, bringing all the generations together.”

Weather permitting, there will be a full slate of Biddy games this weekend at the Lakeside Elementary gym.

Junior Division games will tip-off at 4 p.m. on Saturday, while Senior Division action commences on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Defense! Defense!

Week 4 Junior Division competition began with a defensive struggle between the Rockets and Lakers.

This one went right down to the wire before the Rockets escaped with a hard-fought 14-11 win.

Mason Diehl paced the victors with a game-high six points. He was aided and abetted by teammates Garner Schweighofer, Nathan Mackle, Jayden Aleckna and Brodey Acker each of whom tallied two.

Jackson LaTourette led a balanced Lakers' attack with four points, while Ethan Gries scored three and Owen Gries added two.

Saturday's second game saw the Falcons race out to a big early lead, then cruise to a 26-12 decision over the Hornets.

William Jos rattled the rims for 11 points in leading the Falcons to their fourth straight win. Isaiah Vargas and Kiel Mander netted six apiece, while Colt Cousins chipped in with a deuce.

Remington Pennay paced the Hornets with four points. Teammates Cagney Hamill and Aven Hafler also contributed to the cause offensively.

The third Junior Division contest ended with the Cavs improving to 4-0 via an 18-8 win over the Sixers.

Calvin Krupa and Leon Shursky provided a potent 1-2 punch for the victorious Cavs. Sawyer Smith, Ben Mascussi, Max Shursky and Logan Davis also stood out in supporting roles.

Grayson Roche and Cooper Sullivan tallied four each for the Sixers while Jake McAllister got on the board with a free throw.

Saturday's Junior Division finale proved to be the most exciting game of the day as the Spurs rallied to defeat the Bullets 20-17.

Parker Shariatmadari powered his way to a game-high 10 points for the winners. Blake Diehl also delivered clutch baskets and finished with six.

Chase Chakiris was Top Gun for the Bullets with eight points. Brody O'Neill scored three, while Brentley Eltz and Greydan Kimble added two apiece.

Big Guns Blazing

Local youth hoops fans were treated to three exciting, entertaining Senior Division games on Sunday afternoon.

In the opener, the high-flying Bulls maintained a share of first place via a 30-18 win over the Mavs.

Samuel Tierney tickled the twine for a team-best 10 points in victory. Jack Montgomery posted six, while Jace Kinney and Willem McElroy chipped in with four each.

Kash Kromko dazzled in defeat for the Mavs, hitting for 10 key points. Gavin Kromko netted five, while Calum Gillow tallied two and Jake Berkihiser drained a foul shot.

Sunday's second game proved to be a barnburner as the Cardinals outlasted the Blazers by a score of 28-20.

Levi Murray keyed the Cards' offensive assault with eight points. Cameron Stinavage and Caven Brady scored six each, while Tyler Garing and Matt Schupper finished with four apiece.

Caleb Spaulding erupted for a game-high 11 points for the hard-luck Blazers. Jake D'Albora, Logan Meyers, Nathan Burke and Shane Smith each wound up with two.

The Senior Division's Week Four grand finale saw the Frogs up their record to 3-1 by dealing the Hawks a 28-21 setback.

Blake Martin turned in one of the best offensive outings of the season for the Frogs, exploding for 19 points. Jess Meagher, James Ramirez, Jacob Stiles and Ben Head each contributed two to the cause.

Harvey Waugh Jr, Gabe Samson and Brentley Acker scored seven points apiece to account for all of the Hawks' scoring.
