Hong Kong tightens coronavirus restrictions
Police used pepper spray to disperse a crowd in Hong Kong on Sunday (July 19) for not following measures that restrict gatherings to four people - and just hours later, those coronavirus rules got stricter.
Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam said the global financial hub had seen more than 100 cases in the past 24 hours
- the most since the pandemic took hold in late January.
The measures include non-essential civil servants being told to work from homes, amusement parks, gyms and other venues remaining closed for another seven days and face masks being made mandatory in indoor public areas.
The demonstration earlier in the day was by a group of pro-democracy politicians marking the one-year anniversary of a train station attack on demonstrators and bystanders by an armed mob.
That was one of the most violent moments in last year's pro-democracy protests and at the time police were criticized for not responding quickly enough to calls for help and for not arresting culprits at the scene.
They later made several arrests and said the assailants had links to organized criminal gangs.
