Honor those who served at these Newport County Veterans Day events

While there may be plenty of events to enjoy this weekend it's also an opportunity to honor veterans this weekend.

With the holiday falling on Saturday there is plenty happening across Newport County to recognize those who fought for our country. Ceremonies will include opportunities for veterans to talk about their service and be honored.

Take a look at what's happening locally and make your plans to honor veterans this weekend.

Tiverton

The annual tribute to all veterans sponsored by the Tiverton Historical Society will take place on Veterans Day, Nov. 11 at 11 a.m. in front of the World War I Doughboy Memorial in Bicentennial Park near the Old Stone Bridge.  All veterans in attendance are encouraged to identify themselves and briefly relate their military service.

Newport

American Legion Newport Post 7/Veterans of Foreign Wars, Conover-Leary Post No. 406, will hold a Veteran’s Day ceremony in front of Newport City Hall on Saturday, Nov. 11, at 11 a.m.

The ceremony will include a guest speaker to be announced and a flag pole rededication ceremony.

In the case of inclement weather, the ceremony will be held indoors at the discretion of the Mayor’s office.

• Newport Craft Brewing & Distilling Co., in partnership with Jamestown-based charity, Orion Military Scholarships, will be sponsoring “Red, White & Brews” on Saturday, Nov. 11, from 2 to 5 p.m. The event will be held at Newport Craft’s Brewery, 293 JT Connell Hwy. in Newport.

The celebration, which honors military veterans, is open to the public, and will offer specialty beers, a full outdoor cash bar, a heated event tent, live music, an Orion charity raffle and Wally’s Wiener Wagon.

• In recognition of Veterans Day, several fire pits will be lit surrounding the Fort Adams parade field and the interior fort walls will be illuminated from 5-9 p.m. on Saturday. Music will also be provided by the Larry Brown Swinglane Orchestra.

There will also be a food drive from the Dr. Martin Luther King Community Center Food Bank. Guests are also welcome to bring old/retired/used flags for the Flag Retirement Ceremony provided by Boy Scout Troop 1 from Portsmouth.

Middletown

The VFW 4487 Gilbert-Burton Hall is holding a ceremony on Nov. 11 starting at 9 a.m. from Paradise Valley Park, 19 Prospect Ave.
