A portion of a downtown street was renamed after Cincinnati Reds legend Barry Larkin.

Cincinnati city councilmember Victoria Parks proposed in February that a section of Mehring Way between Main Street and Broadway along Great American Ball Park be renamed Barry Larkin Way. That renaming was finalized with a ceremony Monday.

"I’m honored and humbled to be recognized by the city of Cincinnati," Larkin wrote on Twitter. "This community and the people of this city mean so much to my family and me. To have a street named after me in my hometown is unreal. I thank everyone who made this happen. Go Reds!"

Larkin grew up in Silverton, Ohio, and graduated from Moeller High School.

He played his entire career for the Reds, from 1986 to 2004, and was a key part of the 1990 World Series team. Larkin was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2012, making him the 24th shortstop to be inducted. His No. 11 jersey was officially retired by the Reds in 2012.

Barry Larkin Way is the latest Downtown street to be renamed after a Reds player. In 1985, Second Street was renamed to Pete Rose Way, and the stretch of Main Street in front of Great American Ball Park was named for Joe Nuxhall in 2008. Portions of Second Street and Broadway outside the ballpark were also renamed Johnny Bench Way in 2011.
