Honoring their sacrifice: 2022 Memorial Day ceremonies around Corpus Christi

On the last Monday in May, people around the United States honor the women and men who have died while serving in the military. This national holiday was originally known as Decoration Day and first observed in 1868 to honor soldiers killed during the Civil War. By 1971, the day became a national holiday and had changed over the years to include those killed while serving in the U.S. military. In 2022, the holiday falls on Monday, May 30 and several groups in the Coastal Bend will hold ceremonies commemorating the day.

Memorial Day ceremony at Memory Gardens

Memory Gardens Funeral and Cemetery presents a Memorial Day ceremony at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 28, at 8200 Old Brownsville Road. Join a commemorative service of fallen heroes the in veterans’ section of the cemetery. Information: 361-265-9221 or https://www.facebook.com/MemoryGardensFuneral.

Memorial Day observance with Premont Veterans Association

The Premont Veterans Association presents a Memorial Day observance at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 28, at Premont Park, U.S. Highway 281 at Main Street, Premont. Join the Memorial Day observance with keynote speaker Juan Manuel Escobar, followed by a light lunch, and then come to Premont Cemetery to help place flags for veterans. Memorial Day remembrance ceremony

The City of Portland will host a remembrance ceremony at 5:30 p.m. Sunday, May 29, at Portland Veterans Memorial (behind City Hall), 1900 Billy G. Webb Dr., Portland. The Veterans Band of Corpus Christi will perform and will include a guest speaker and remarks from city officials followed by refreshments from the Portland Rotary Club. Memorial Day ceremony at Sherrill Park

Memorial Day observance in Rockport

A Memorial Day observance will be at 10 a.m. Monday, May 30, at Veterans Memorial Park on Austin Street in Rockport. The ceremony will include a musical tribute, as well as a “Report of Units” from the American GI Forum Post & Unit #324F, Carl Morrison American Legion Post & Unit #363 & Sons of the Legion, and Stewart-Wendell Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #3904. Guest speaker is Dr. Joshua Garcia, Superintendent of Aransas County ISD and U.S. Navy veteran. Refreshments will be served following the ceremony at the American Legion, 1701 S. Memorial Day ceremony at Coastal Bend State Veterans Cemetery

The Coastal Bend State Veterans Cemetery will host a Memorial Day ceremony at noon Monday, May 30, at 9974 Interstate Hwy. 37 Access Road. Featuring a performance by the Veterans Band of Corpus Christi and keynote speaker Nueces County Judge Barbara Canales. Information: 361-248-4830.

Honoring our Military at Seaside Memorial Park

Seaside Memorial Park and Funeral Home presents its annual Honoring our Military remembrance at 1 p.m. Monday, May 30, at 4357 Ocean Drive (please enter through Airline Drive gate). Speakers include Bishop Emeritus Edmond Carmody, Nueces County Sheriff J.C. Hooper, Nueces County Judge Barbara Canales, State Rep. Todd Hunter, and U.S. Marine Veteran Joey Allen. Memorial Day ceremony aboard USS Lexington

The USS Lexington Museum on the Bay presents its annual Memorial Day remembrance at 2 p.m. Monday, May 30, at 2914 N. Shoreline Blvd. Presented in honor of those who have served our country and made the ultimate sacrifice, followed by a wreath laying and flag retirement ceremony.
