Hoop City Classic roundup for Dec. 30: Bridgewater-Emery boys fall in tight contest with Campbell County

Dec. 30—MITCHELL — Campbell County (Wyo.) took the lead with just under three minutes to go and held on to take down Bridgewater-Emery.

The Huskies fell 48-46 to the Camels on Friday at the Corn Palace in boys basketball action.

Nash Lutgen led Campbell County with 14 points, while Rylan Robertson added 11 and went 3-for-6 from 3-point range. Jeffrey Pelton paced the team with 12 rebounds in the win.

For B-E, Sutton Arend racked up a game-high 18 points, to go along with seven rebounds and five assists, and Camdyn Stotereau added 13 points.

The Camels outscored the Huskies 16-7 in the fourth quarter after B-E had outscored Campbell County 15-7 in the third. B-E shot 36.2% as a team and 31.3% from 3-point range, while Campbell County hit 34.8% of its shots from the field and 28% of its shots from behind the arc.

The two squads both collected 31 rebounds and the Camels committed one more turnover (12) than BE (11).

B-E (1-3) will face Sanborn Central/Woonsocket on Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2023, at home in its next contest before a pair of road games.

MITCHELL — An efficient shooting performance led Elk Point-Jefferson over Waconia, Minnesota, on Friday afternoon at the Corn Palace.

The Huskies shot 52% as a team, led by Easton Kempf, who scored a team-best 16 points on 5-for-7 shooting. He added seven rebounds, while Garrett Merkley put up 10 points for EPJ in the win.

EPJ jumped out to a 17-5 lead after the first quarter and carried a 30-19 lead to the halftime break, with its lead getting as large as 21 late in the fourth quarter.

Will Kirsch was the leading scorer for Waconia with 17 points, and Jackson Hayes added 11. EPJ outrebounded Waconia 34-26 on the game and held Waconia to 37% shooting from the floor.

EPJ also assisted on 19 of its 27 field goals and came up with 13 steals, three of which came from Merkley.

The Huskies (5-1) will take on Canistota on Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2023, at home in their next contest.

MITCHELL — A big third quarter helped Dream City International (Ariz.) take down DeLaSalle (Minn.) on Friday at the Corn Palace.

DCI outscored the Islanders 16-5 out of the break and 18-10 in the fourth quarter to secure the win. Jovan Milicevic led an all-around scoring effort for DCI, leading the team with 12 points, while Nait George and Tracy Kalonda each added 11. Mathiang Maker tacked on nine to go along with 10 rebounds.

Lehigh commit Nasir Whitlock led DeLaSalle with 27 points, 20 of which came in the first half. He finished the game 6-for-11 from 3-point range, as the Islanders shot 39.1% from behind the arc as a team. Jaden Morgan also had double digits in the loss, putting up 13 points.

DCI pulled down 34 rebounds to DeLaSalle's 24 and shot 47.4% as a team, limiting the Islanders to 35.4% from the field.

MITCHELL — Totino-Grace (Minn.) turned on the jets after the first quarter.

Houston (Tenn.) led by six after one, but Totino-Grace limited Houston to just 16 points across the final three quarters, while putting up 52.

Tommy Humphries and Isaiah Johnson each put up 14 points in the win, with Johnson pulling down a team-best eight rebounds. Ohio State commit Taison Chatman added nine points, five rebounds and two assists off the bench.

For Houston, St. Louis commit Brock Vice led the way with 12 points, six rebounds and a block, while Mavrick Miller chipped in five points.

T-G outrebounded Houston 41-28 and had six turnovers while forcing 15 from Houston. Houston hit just one of its 12 3-point tries and shot 29.7% from the field as a team, while T-G shot 41.7%.

MITCHELL — Maddyn Greenway erupted for 30 points, five rebounds and five assists as Providence Academy (Minn.) cruises to a 32-point win over Thunder Basin (Wyo.) in a girls game Friday at the Corn Palace.

Greenway had 17 first-half points and PA held a 12-points lead at the break. All told, she hit 12 of her 24 shot attempts as PA shot 48.4% as a team. Hope Counts chipped in 13 in the win, while Grace Counts added 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Laney McCarty was the lone Thunder Basin player in double figures with 12 points to go along with six rebounds, while Peiytyn Williams added six points and eight rebounds and Kinley Solem contributed eight points.

Thunder Basin was limited to 27% shooting from the field and committed 19 turnovers in the loss.

MITCHELL — Tea Area scored its final field goal with 29 seconds to go to secure a three-point win over Campbell County (Wyo.) in girls basketball action Friday at the Corn Palace.

Three different players had double-digit points for the Titans, led by Mara Grant, who put up 16 to go along with eight rebounds. Kendra McKinney and Miah Weber scored 13 and 12, respectively, with Stella Peterson picking up eight points and eight rebounds.

Tea Area led by four at the half and never trailed by more than three points during the game.

Cami Curtis led the Camels with a 19-point, 10-rebound double-double, while Sydnee Strietz chipped in 11 points and eight rebounds, with five of those rebounds coming on the offensive glass.

The Titans shot 41.4% as a team, though they went 1-for-8 from 3-point range and committed 18 turnovers in the win, but they limited Campbell County to 29.2% from behind the arc and 34.6% from the floor.

Tea (3-0) will take on Vermillion in a home contest on Tuesday, Jan. 3.
