Caney Valley High School basketball teams launched their seasons with a burst of firepower while Copan High hoop squads forged an action-packed split in Tuesday area action to end November.

Following are summaries.

Girls: Caney Valley 59, Barnsdall 21

By the end of the first quarter, the only mystery was how many Washington’s the concession stand would rake in.

The CV Lady Trojans blitzed to a 23-5 lead in the first eight minutes and continue to throw logs on the fire of desire.

“We talked to the girls about coming out with a sense of urgency in the first quarter,” veteran Caney Valley head coach Deric Longan said. “We hit five-of-six-threes in the first quarter. … We blew it open quick.”

Returning starters Sammi Gilbreath, Chloe Scherman and Jade Upton combined for 30 points, led by Gilbreath with 13. First-year starter Libby Thompson dropped in nine points.

Next up, Caney Valley plays host Saturday evening to Oklahoma Union.

Fueled by the play at point guard by Rocky Hester and Tate Longan’s team-high 17 points, the CV Trojans took control in the first half and secured the win with a 24-point outburst in the third period.

Also scoring in double-digits for the Trojans were Zack Ketchum, 11, and Mav Condry, 10. Nine players contributed to the scoring total.

Two areas in which the Trojans excelled included 15-of-17 free throw shooting in the first half and “we rebounded pretty well for the most part,” veteran CV coach Tug Brinker said, adding the Trojans made only 11 turnovers.

The Trojans stayed in a zone defense the whole way and succeeded in producing several turnovers to fuel the offense.

Jarrett Shambles sprang off the bench to add 17 points and “played super hard on defense,” Stacy said.

He also praised the work of Karson Woodworth for his rebounding and “getting the ball down the court.

“He really got us going in attacking the paint,” the coach added.

Who knows what the Copan Lady Hornets (0-3) would do with a full team?

Even though she has an eight-girl roster, head coach Kristy Bryan has yet to have her entire team ready. She suited up seven for this game, but one was still recovering from illness.

“We’re going to have to learn how to handle the press and get back on defense,” Bryan said.
