Hoops and hockey are back: Introducing the South Shore High School Girls Game of the Week

As high school sports teams roll into a brand new season this winter, it's time to unveil a new project to match it.

The concept is quite simple, and so is its name: "The High School Girls Game of the Week."

That has a nice ring to it, doesn't it?

Each week, we'll upload a poll with a few high school girls games to choose from to cover. Coverage will span from written stories, photo galleries and highlight videos. It'll be a little different every week, it's an evolving process.

This idea was sparked by a conversation with veteran Patriot Ledger photographer Greg Derr. The award-winning photographer spent all his Friday nights in the fall covering high school football (doing a stellar job I might add). With so much of our local high school coverage centered around football, having four state champions and seven state finalists will do that, he suggested that the winter coverage should focus on the girls. The South Shore is loaded with girls who star on the hardwood, ice, track and the mat (wrestling and gymnastics). This winter, we're going to put an emphasis on highlighting those talented girls.

The poll is extended to all girls winter sports: basketball, ice hockey, winter track or gymnastics.

Regardless of how it's is covered (video, written, etc), a Ledger MVP will be chosen to award and spotlight a standout player from the game/meet.

Let's start here.
