Hoops Stars: Watertown's Norberg, Great Plains Lutheran's Hansen lead top performers for Jan. 17-23
Last week was a good week for the two high school boys basketball teams in Watertown.
Drew Norberg of Watertown High School led the Arrows to a weekend sweep over Rapid City Stevens and Central in the Civic Arena and Sam Hansen sparked Great Plains Lutheran to win over Waverly-South Shore and Iroquois-Doland.
For their efforts, Norberg and Hansen spearhead the Public Opinion’s list of top area performers for the week of Jan. 17-23.
Norberg opened his weekend by scoring 20 points in a win over Stevens and celebrated his birthday on Saturday with 24 points and four steals in a win over Central.
Hansen kicked off his week with 21 points and nine rebounds in a win over Waverly-South Shore and then scored a school-record 34 points in a win over Iroquois-Doland. Hansen went 13-for-16 from the field with six 3-pointers and also added five rebounds.

Boys Basketball
• Reese Stark, Watertown — Stark also was a spark for the Arrow boys, scoring 21 points in the win over Stevens and added 10 points and five steals in the win over Central.
• Damon Wilkinson, De Smet — Wilkinson tallied 27 points and 11 rebounds in the top-rated Bulldogs’ win over No. 2 White River in the Hanson Corn Palace Classic and also had 24 points and seven rebounds in a win over Hamlin.
• Kalen Garry, De Smet — Garry scored 24 points in each game and added eight rebounds against White River and seven against Hamlin.
• Oliver Vincent, Sioux Valley — The fifth-rated Class A Cossacks downed No. 4 Tea Area in the Hanson Corn Palace Classic with 16 points, nine assists and six rebounds from Vincent. He also added 23 points and seven assists in a win over Deubrook Area.
• Riley BraveBull, Sisseton — BraveBull scored 23 points in a win over Redfield.
• Jason Fisher, Sisseton — Fisher added a double-double (19 points, 13 rebounds) against Redfield.
• Damon Opdahl, Waubay-Summit — Opdahl had 27 points and five steals in a loss to Ethan in the Hanson Corn Palace Classic and tallied 12 points, six assists, six rebounds and four steals in a win over Milbank.
• Tristan Nielsen, Castlewood — Nielsen’s 22 points led the Warriors past Canistota in the DVC Classic.
• Cade Letsche, Arlington — Letsche poured in 24 points in the Cardinals’ win over Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley (Minn.) in the DVC Classic.
• Dawson Bury, Estelline-Hendricks — Bury notched 20 points in the Redhawks’ loss to Scotland in the DVC Classic.
• Josh McMasters, Lake Preston — The Divers got 22 points from McMasters in a loss to Menno in the DVC Classic.
• Bennett Schwenn, Milbank — The Bulldogs slipped past Florence-Henry with help from Schwenn’s 14 points, eight rebounds and five assists.
• Trey Jurgens, Wilmot — Jurgens poured in 33 points in a loss to Leola-Frederick Area and then recorded a double-double (15 points, 11 rebounds) in the Wolves’ first win of the season over Waverly-South Shore.
• Jaydon Keller, Webster Area — Keller had two double-doubles, one (25 points, 14 rebounds) in a loss to Florence-Henry and the other (30 and 12) in a win over Aberdeen Roncalli.
• Jacob Pereboom, Webster Area — Pereboom added 20 points and nine rebounds in the win over Roncalli.
• Juron Adams, Tiospa Zina — Adams scored 23 points in a win over Hamlin.
• Gavin Benck, Deuel — Benck tallied 21 points in a loss to Flandreau and 18 points and six rebounds in a win over Sisseton.
• Ty Langager, Sisseton — Langager just missed a double-double with 20 points and nine rebounds in the loss to Deuel.
• Jonathan Johnston, Waubay-Summit — The Mustangs had the fourth-rated Class B Knights on the ropes before falling and Johnston led the way with 14 points, seven rebounds and four assists.
• Ryker Erstad, Arlington — Erstad’s a good player and proved it with 21 points and 11 rebounds in a win over Lake Preston.
• Hayden Ruesink, Sioux Valley — Ruesink went for 20 points and eight rebounds against Deubrook Area.
• Carter Comes, Waverly-South Shore — Comes produced 20 points and nine rebounds in the loss to Great Plains Lutheran.
• Ethan Kjenstad, Great Plains Lutheran — Kjenstad scored 18 points against Waverly-South Shore and added 15 points and five steals against Iroquois-Doland.
• Braxton Saathoff, Estelline-Hendricks — The Redhawks beat Oldham-Ramona-Rutland with 23 points from Saathoff.
• Jasiah Red Bear, Tiopsa Zina — Red Bear’s 28-point effort led the Wambdi past Britton-Hecla.
• Mehki Keller, Florence-Henry — Keller had a 27-point, six-rebound performance in the win over Webster Area, making 10 of 11 free throws.
Girls Basketball
• Mali York, Great Plains Lutheran — The Panthers downed Iroquois-Doland with York notching 20 points and seven rebounds.
• Mackenzie Everson, Castlewood — Everson garnered 18 points in a win over Oldham-Ramona-Rutland.
• Maddie Horn, Castlewood — Horn had a big week, tallying 17 points and 10 rebounds in a win over Dell Rapids St. Mary, 18 points in the win over ORR and 22 points in a loss to fifth-rated Class B De Smet.
• Kami Wadsworth, Hamlin — Wadsworth scored her 1,000th career point — actually 33 of those career points — in a win over fifth-rated Class B De Smet and also went for 18 points and eight rebounds in another win over Tiospa Zina.
• Carley Landmark, Deubrook Area — Landmark’s 19 points and nine rebounds lifted the Dolphins past Dell Rapids St. Mary.
• Hadley Carlson, Arlington — Carlson’s more than just a volleyball player. She had 24 points, seven rebounds, six steals and four assists in a win over Lake Preston.
• Mary Rupp, Tri-State — Rupp poured in 21 points in a win over Wilmot.
• Maurina Street, Milbank — Street’s 26 points carried the Bulldogs past Waubay-Summit.
• Madeline Remund, Wilmot — Remund had 21 points in a loss to Clark-Willow Lake and 24 points, five rebounds, three steals and three assists in a loss to Leola-Frederick Area.
• Taylor Shelstad, Lac qui Parle Valley — Shelstad recorded 22 points, 11 rebounds and four assists in a win over Yellow Medicine East and 19 points, seven rebounds and five steals in a loss to Minneota.
• Camryn Lee, Lac qui Parle Valley — Not to be outdone, Lee had 20 points, four steals and three assists against YME and 18 points, eight rebounds and four assists against Minneota.
• Aidyn Bruns, Canby — The Lancers downed BOLD with 19 points and 12 rebounds from Bruns.
Wrestling
• Micah Hach, Watertown — The freshmen is one of the few healthy bodies in Watertown’s lineup and recorded three falls on the way to winning the 285-pound championship in the Sioux City Bishop Heelan Invite. He also won by fall in the Arrows’ 61-12 dual victory over Milbank.
• Holden Hawkins, Sisseton — Hawkins (18-3) went 4-0 and won the 113-pound title in the Kingsbury County Invite.
• Ian Metz, Sisseton — Metz (16-2) also won four matches and the 120-pound title in the Kingsbury County Invite.
• Dylan Zell, Kingsbury County — Zell (22-5) enjoyed a 7-0 week, winning four matches and the 132-pound title in the Kingsbury County Invite and going 3-0 to help the Knights win three duals in a quadrangular.
• Lane Fink, Canby — Fink improved to 22-5 with four wins and the 138-pound championship in the Kingsbury County Invite.
• Jacob Johnson, Milbank — Johnson evened his season record with three wins and the 120-pound title in the River City Rumble at Chamberlain.
• Barrett Schneck, Milbank — Schneck (22-4) won by fall in the Bulldogs’ dual loss to Watertown and then went on to claim the 160-pound title in the River City Rumble.
• Gunnar Kvistad, Clark-Willow Lake — Kvistad (29-4) won two matches to help the Cyclones get two dual wins in a home triangular and then added four more wins on the way to taking the 152-pound title in the Parkston Little B Invite.
• Caleb McGregor, Webster Area — McGregor (21-4) went 3-0 on the way to taking the 220-pound title in the Parkston Little B Invite.
• Annie Witt, Webster Area — Witt pinned three foes and won the 154-pound division in the Girls Governor Wrestling Invite at Pierre. She is now 11-2 on the season.
Gymnastics
• Myah Morris, Watertown — Morris led the Arrows to a second-place finish in their own home invite by winning the floor exercise (9.625), vault (9.825) and all-around (38.3) titles. She also won the vault (9.9) earlier in the week in a home triangular.
• Natalie Benson, Watertown — Benson placed in three events and tied for seventh in the all-around (34.425) at the Watertown Invite.
• Aubrey Fraasch, Milbank Area — The Class A gymnast finished ninth in the all-around (34.3) in the Watertown Invite.
• Sterling Mertens, Britton-Hecla — Mertens won the vault (8.95) and uneven bars (8.05) on the way to a runner-up finish in the all-around (32.55) in the Deuel quadrangular.
• Hannah Cutshaw, Deuel — Cutshaw won the all-around title in the home quadrangular with a score of 32.85.
• Elise Hotzler, Deuel — Hotzler took the floor exercise (8.75) and finished fourth in the all-around (31.3) competition in the quadrangular.
Hockey
• Austin Green, Watertown Laker Boys — Green notched a hat trick in the Lakers’ 4-1 home win over Sioux Center, Iowa.
• Mason Witt, Watertown Laker Boys — Witt recorded a goal and two assists in the victory.
• Owen McBride, Watertown Laker Boys — McBride tallied 23 saves in the win and had 38 more in a loss to Brookings.
• Jaclyn Lloyd, Watertown Laker Girls — Lloyd scored six goals to help the Lakers cap a 2-2 weekend with a third-place finish in the CAM-AM Youth Challenge Cup at Madison, Wis.
• Jillian Busch, Watertown Laker Girls — Busch had two goals and an assist in the tourney.
• Janel Lloyd, Watertown Laker Girls — Lloyd added a goal and two assists in the tourney.
• Angelyn Birnell, Watertown Laker Girls — Birnell recorded 64 saves in the four games.
