Ames, get ready to up your T-shirt game.

A splash of wit and a sprinkle of good-natured chaos will transform Main Street next month as the clever clothing company, Raygun, announced Tuesday it will open its first Ames location.

Raygun posted the announcement to its Facebook page: “Ames here we come! Surprise! We are opening on Main Street in late June! To kick things off, we're taking some Ames slogan ideas. Like always, just post your ideas below. #raygun

“Excited to join Dog-Eared Books Ames, The Great Plains Sauce & Dough Company, Morning Bell Coffee Roasters, Ames Public Library, Octagon Center for the Arts, Skunk River Cycles, and more!”

The announcement and request for slogan ideas generated more than 500 comments in the first 24 hours.

Raygun created some graphics, using its iconic all-caps font, and posted them to the comments, including:

  • Ames: Award-winning tap water.

  • Hooray for Ames!

  • It’s all fun and Ames.

  • Ames to please.

  • Ames: Peanut butter was invented here. *Uhhhh, you’re welcome.

A photo of the Main Street storefront is pictured in the Facebook post, showing a site in the historic Sheldon Munn building. The location in the 300 block is next to Life Distilled, a modern-day apothecary that opened in 2021.

Ames will be the sixth city in Iowa to get a Raygun store; others include Cedar Rapids, Cedar Falls, Iowa City, Davenport and the flagship store in Des Moines. There are also locations in Omaha, Chicago and Kansas City, according to Raygun’s website.
