Hoover no-hits UTA in 4-0 Tech victory

ARLINGTON — Sage Hoover threw a no-hitter with five strikeouts in her first start for Texas Tech, leading the Red Raiders to a 4-0 victory Saturday night against UT-Arlington, the host of the Maverick Invitational softball tournament.

Tech wrapped up the weekend Sunday with a 12-1 rout of Tulsa. Abbie Orrick touched off an eight-run first inning with a three-run homer. Peyton Blythe hit a two-run homer in the second inning, and Alanna Barraza drove in two runs with a walk and a double.

Tech moved to 3-2, and Tulsa dropped to 1-3.

In Saturday's late game, UTA (2-1) put two runners on against Hoover: Zaia Castruita walked in the first inning, and Kimber Cortemelia walked in the fourth.

Hoover (2-0) is a sophomore righthander from Emory Rains. She transferred to Tech from Northwestern State, where she was 11-7 last season and the Southland Conference freshman of the year.

Orrick broke a scoreless tie with a solo home run in the fourth inning, and the Red Raiders made it 3-0 in the fifth on an RBI double by Arriana Villa and a run-scoring single from Ellie Bailey. Bailey tacked on a sacrifice fly in the seventh.

Women's golf

VIERA, Fla. — Texas Tech will go into the final round of the weather-shortened Columbia Classic in second place among 14 teams after second-round play Sunday was canceled because of high winds. Play was stopped during the noon hour and the scores discarded.

In Saturday's first round, Tech's Lauren Zaretsky shot a 2-under 70 and Gala Dumez, Anna Dong and Shannon Tan all carded even-par 72. Red Raiders Cecilie Nielsen and Libby Fleming, both entered as individual medalists, shot 72 and 74, respectively.

The Red Raiders, 2-under as a team, trail Princeton by four shots. The final round is scheduled for 7:30 a.m. CST Monday.

Men's tennis

Texas Tech shut out UT-Rio Grande Valley and Abilene Christian by identical 7-0 scores Sunday at the McLeod Tennis Center, running its win streak to three.

Olle Wallin and Franco Ribero won Nos. 1 and 2 singles in straight sets in both matches, and Lorenzo Esquici won both his singles match in straight sets, on the No. 6 court against UTRGV and on the No. 5 court against ACU. Isaac Arevalo also won No. 3 singles in both duels with his ACU opponent retiring in the second set.

The Red Raiders got No. 4 singles victories from Dimitrios Azoidis in the UTRGV match and from Reed Collier in the ACU match. Tyler Stewart took No. 5 singles against UTRGV and No. 6 singles against ACU.
