Hope Athletics Year in Review: Top 13 athletes

Ben Catton, men's swimming

The sophomore from Holland Christian is already making an impact in the pool for the Flying Dutchmen. He earned his first individual MIAA titles in the 100 butterfly, 100 backstroke and was a part of a winning 400 relay team. He also earned an MIAA record in the 100 butterfly, set new Hope College records in the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke, earned first-team all-MIAA and second-team All-American honors.

Brady Eding, football 

The former standout at Hamilton was the anchor on the offensive line for the Flying Dutchmen in 2022. With a new quarterback behind him, the emphasis was on the run game all season long and Eding and the rest of the line were up for the challenge. Hope averaged over 230 rushing yards per game and earned a share of the MIAA title with a 5-1 conference record. The senior was selected to the all-MIAA first-team offense and also earned all-region honors. He was also a finalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy, better known as the academic Heisman.

Nick Hoffman, men's track & field

The list of accolades for the senior was very long in 2022. During the indoor season, he set a school record in the 800, won the MIAA title in the one-mile run, earned Great Lakes All-Region honors as well as All-American accolades in the distance medley relay. In the outdoor campaign, he won the MIAA crown in the 1500, was named all-region in the 800 and 1500, qualified for the NCAA Championships and was named a COSIDA Academic All-American.

Sydney Jackson, women's tennis 

The senior won MIAA MVP for the second straight season, going undefeated in conference play in 2022 and helped Hope earn a seventh straight conference title and 10th straight MIAA Tournament championship. She helped lead the team to the NCAA Regional Semifinals.

Sara Kraus, women's swimming

Krauss, a freshman from Rockford, proved she'll be a force to be reckoned with in the coming years. She won MIAA Swimmer of the Year honors this season. She dominated at the MIAA Championships, earning the conference crown in the 200 backstroke (MIAA record), 100 backstroke, 200 individual medley, 400 medley relay (MIAA record) and 800 freestyle relay. The freshman also earned all-MIAA and All-American honors.

Evan Maday, baseball 

The super senior from Kentwood has been making a name for himself on the diamond since the moment he stepped foot in Holland, but his final year in the orange and blue was definitely the highlight. Maday broke Hope's all-time hits record, finishing his career with 231, and the stolen bases record with 104. In 2022 he tied the single-season home run mark with 11 as well. That performance helped him earn several honors including MIAA position player of the year, all-region and All-American honors from D3baseball.com.

Sydney Muller, women's basketball

Averaging just over nine points per game, it might be a bit strange to find Muller on this list to somebody just looking through box scores. But the All-MIAA second-teamer and all-region honoree was the heart and soul of the Flying Dutch's national title-winning team and was named the Final Four's Most Outstanding Player. She played with reckless abandon driving into the lane and gave the team a spark in the rare instance that they needed it. Her basketball IQ was also off the charts, always making the extra pass to get a better look for one of her teammates. A transfer from Cornerstone, Muller finished her career at Hope with a record of 100-7, with just one of those losses coming in the last three seasons.

Jack Radzville, men's lacrosse

The senior finishes his Hope career with a stellar 147 goals, earning over 50 goals in each of the last two seasons. He earned MIAA offensive MVP honors for the second straight season as well. He was named a USILA Scholar All-American and was named All-American honorable mention for his performance on the field.

Kenedy Schoonveld, women's basketball

The super senior from Holland Christian had one of the most decorated seasons from any Hope athlete in the history of the school. Not only was she the star among stars on the national-title-winning women's basketball team, but she won the Josten's Trophy which is awarded to the most outstanding women's and men's Division III basketball players of the year. She was also named the MIAA MVP for the third consecutive season, the WBCA Division III Player of the Year, the Regional Player of the Year by D3Hoops.com and a first-team All-American.

Schoonveld came back for an additional year after COVID stripped away her shot at a national championship in 2020 and 2021. She finishes her time in orange and blue with a career record of 130-8, with just one of those losses coming in the last three years.

Evan Thomas, men's basketball

The junior from Okemos was selected as Hope's first men's basketball MIAA MVP since 2017. He averaged nearly 20 points per game and nine boards per contest. Those stats helped power an unlikely MIAA regular season and conference tournament title run after the Flying Dutchmen were selected to finish fourth in the MIAA preseason poll, earning the program's first trip to the NCAA Tournament since 2018.

In addition to his MIAA MVP honors, he was named All-Region by D3Hoops.com and was named a second-team All-American.

Ana Tucker, track & field 

The junior earned All-American honors during the cross country season by finishing 11th in the National Championship race. During the outdoor track season, she earned All-American accolades in both the 10,000 meters by finishing in eighth place, and the 5,000 meters with a fifth-place finish. She also won the MIAA title in the 5,000 and qualified for the national championships during the indoor season.

Olivia Voskuil, women's basketball 

Just like Schoonveld and Muller, Voskuil decided to come back and use her final season of eligibility to make a run at the national title. By now, we all know how that worked out and the 6-foot-3 woman in the middle was a big reason for it. The Holland Christian grad didn't just dominate with points and boards in the offensive post, but she was the best defensive player the Flying Dutch have ever had. She shattered the carer blocks record with 259, well in front of the previous record of 215. One of those blocks in the final seconds of the MIAA title game against Trine helped Hope clinch its third straight conference tournament crown.

Voskuil was named MIAA Defensive Player of the Year for the fourth straight season and also earned All-MIAA, All-Region and fourth-team All-American honors.

Tracy Westra, volleyball

The senior setter earned MIAA MVP honors for the first time in her career. She helped the Flying Dutch remain ranked in the top-10 in the nation for the vast majority of the season and powered Hope to its first MIAA title since 2014.

Westra also earned AVCA All-Region and All-American honors as well as CoSIDA Academic All-American accolades.
