Hope College swimming sweeps Albion, Alma in MIAA tri

HOLLAND - The Hope College men's swimming and diving teams earned a pair of victories on Friday, defeating Albion College, 169-64, and Alma College, 185-38, at Holland Aquatic Center.

Sophomore Conner Halberg (Novi, Michigan / Northville) won both the 1,000-yard freestyle with a swim of 9 minutes, 56.05 seconds and the 100 backstroke with a time of 56.28 seconds.

Sophomore Alex Boersema (Holland, Michigan / West Ottawa) took first in the 500 freestyle by clocking a time of 5:00.13 and led off the first-place 400 freestyle relay that posted a swim of 3:15.93 with sophomore Joel Cummins (Osceola, Indiana / Penn), freshman Sam Albrecht (Jenison, Michigan / Jenison) and Kenny Pontius (Grand Rapids, Michigan / East Grand Rapids).

Sophomore Colin Kalkman (Zeeland, Michigan / Holland Christian) recorded a winning 100 butterfly of 52.55 seconds and started the first-place 200 medley relay that went 1:36.70 with junior Reilly LaGrand (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Catholic Central), sophomore Dallas Fisher (Highland, Michigan / Detroit Catholic Central) and freshman Bishop Carl (Cincinnati, Ohio / Sycamore).

Fisher touched the wall first in the 200 individual medley at 1:58.55.

Cummins clocked a winning 100 freestyle swim of 48.70 seconds.

Junior Ben Catton (Holland, Michigan / Holland Christian) took first in the 200 freestyle by posting a time of 1:47.32.

Junior Justin Romero (Detroit, Michigan / Woodhaven) won 1-meter diving with a score of 221.20 points.

The Hope College women's swimming and diving team rode the strength of three event double winners to MIAA victories against Albion College, 163-76, and Alma College, 191-42, on Friday at Holland Aquatic Center.

Freshman Ashley Swingewood (Carmel, Indiana / Carmel HS) clocked first-place swims in the 1,000-yard freestyle of 10 minutes, 55.83 seconds and the 100 freestyle of 54.67 seconds.

Sophomore Greta Gidley (Franklin, Michigan / Mercy) posted winning times in the 100 butterfly at 58.45 seconds and the 100 breaststroke at 1:09.41.

Sophomore Abby Koops (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Forest Hills Northern) recorded first-place scores on the 1-meter board with a score of 246.0 points and the 3-meter board at 245.15.

Senior Alyssa Kerkman (South Bend, Indiana / St. Joseph) took first in the 200 individual medley with a swim of 2:17.58.

Hope's 200 medley of Sara Kraus, fifth-year senior Aubrey East (Farmington Hills, Michigan / North Farmington), junior Jocelyn Hobbs (Ypsilanti, Michigan / Milan) and junior Maddy O'Donnell (Lincolnshire, Illinois / Stevenson) clocked a winning time of 1:52.82.

The Flying Dutch's 400 freestyle relay of Kraus, sophomore Grace Wesley (Grosse Pointe Shores, Michigan / Grosse Pointe North), sophomore Norah Martin (Middleton, Wisconsin / Middleton) and freshman Katie Hermann (Canton, Michigan / Mercy) won in 3:41.24.
