A new therapy consulting practice – New Hope Counseling and Therapy – recently opened in Beaver County.

The practice is run by Sue Miedema, who said she will take any and all clients of all ages, such as those who suffer from anxiety, depression, ADHD, PTSD or grief.

She said for the time being, all appointments will be held virtually, and will stick with individual patients for the time being.

Miedema added she hopes to one day open up an office, at which point she said it will be easier to do services like family or couple's therapy.

Miedema graduated with a master's degree in professional psychology from Geneva College and is currently working online on a Ph.D. in marriage and family therapy.

Over the years, she has worked in different outpatient and "wraparound" settings, as well as at Glade Run Lutheran Services, before opening up her own practice in December.

"It’s been something that I’ve been wanting to do for a long time, and I just decided the timing was right to open a practice," Miedema said. "It’s needed. It’s definitely needed in the community, and I think it’s going to be a great benefit."

She said there is often a stigma from people who are asking for help with their mental health, as they are often afraid thinking it makes them look weak.

"You’re actually really strong if you’re willing to admit that you need help, or that you want help," Miedema said. "I will base things on that strength, try to build that strength."
