Hopewell names city police veteran as interim chief

HOPEWELL – A longtime city police officer is being brought out of retirement to serve as Hopewell’s interim police chief.

It’s actually the second time around as interim chief for Greg Taylor. He took over temporarily in 2018 between John Keohane’s retirement and Kamran Afzal’s appointment. Now he will take over again while the city looks for a full-time replacement for the retiring A.J. Starke.

His appointment was announced Wednesday by interim City Manager Dr. Concetta Manker.

Taylor spent 37 years in the Hopewell Police Department, and during that time, he has served as commander of all of the department divisions. He retired in 2019.

While in uniform, Taylor was responsible for developing several community outreach programs in Hopewell, the city said in the statement announcing his hire.

In that same statement, Taylor said he was “honored and humbled” to take over as interim chief. He called it “a privilege to serve the Hopewell Community and the Hopewell Police Department.”

Taylor’s first day as interim chief will be April 1.
