Hopewell: Tour historic Weston Manor along Appomattox River, view 40-image gallery

HOPEWELL — The Petersburg Garden Club hosted the Petersburg-Prince George Historic Garden Week tour in the spring. It was a blooming success. Ticket holders were encouraged to visit nearby places of interest.

Hopewell Manor, overlooking the Appomattox River, was one of them. It was the first time I toured the home which is considered a classic example of Virginia Georgian architecture. The 18th century home is rumored to be inhabited by spirits. Casper did not float through me, but I did see some white orchids that were quite lovely.

The centerpiece on the dining room table was beautiful. Tina Terry, River City Flower Studio owner, designed it with ivy and the following flowers: yellow lilies, purple liatris, pink roses, hot pink gerberas, white wax, pink rice, green hypericum, green spider mums, lavender tulips.

"I was honored that the Appomattox Garden Club asked me to make a design. It was fun to be able to participate in an awesome project where everyone gets to showcase their creativity," Terry said. "I grew up in Hopewell, and it's exciting to be a part of the events in my hometown."

Last year, one of Terry's children got married at Weston Manor. "As a child, I took art classes in the basement," Terry said. "It was a privilege to do something professionally in such a beautiful, historical venue."
