Hopewell's John Randolph Medical Center will become TriCities Hospital next month

HOPEWELL — After 107 years, Hopewell's hospital is changing its name.

HCA Virginia, the parent company of John Randolph Medical Center on state Route 10, said in an email Tuesday that the name will change Dec. 14 to TriCities Hospital. In a related move, the company's free-standing emergency-care center TriCities ER on Temple Avenue will be renamed Prince George ER.

In a statement Tuesday afternoon, JRMC chief executive officer Joe Mazzo said the name change was necessary because of the hospital's expansion beyond the Hopewell city limits and into areas south of Richmond. The new name, the statement said, "better reflects the unity of the extensive TriCities’ network" of healthcare providers and specialists.

“We are immensely proud of the positive impact our hospital family has had on the residents of this region,” Mazzo's statement read “While our name is changing, our commitment to the communities we serve is not. Patients and families can continue to rely on HCA Virginia’s trusted care teams to deliver personal, local care.”

The hospital, built in 1915, was named for Prince George County native John Randolph, a former U.S. congressman and advocate of states' rights in the early 19th century.

TriCities ER, located several miles away from the hospital, opened several years ago as the area's first free-standing emergency treatment center. It has since been joined by Bon Secours Southside Emergency Center, which opened earlier this year in Colonial Heights.

In addition to JRMC and the ER, HCA Virginia also owns Chippenham Medical Center and Retreat Hospital in Richmond, Johnson-Willis Medical Center in Midlothian, Henrico Doctors and Parham Doctors hospitals in Henrico County, and several related practices and care centers throughout central Virginia.
