Hopkins study shows Safe Streets effective at reducing crime

A new study from Johns Hopkins University shows that Safe Streets has had a major impact on bringing down crime in Baltimore City. Safe Streets is a violence intervention program where volunteers are recruited to help settle disputes and connect people to services. The program has received praise from government officials, and some mixed opinions. The study found that the program was effective in reducing homicides and non-fatal shootings from 2007-22. It also found that homicides were on average 32% lower in its first four years at the five longest-running sites. It is also associated with a 23% reduction in non-fatal shootings across all 11 sites.
