Hopkinsville attorney drowns in U.S. Virgin Islands

HOPKINSVILLE, Ky. (WKRN) – A Hopkinsville attorney drowned while in the U.S. Virgin Islands late last month, officials said.

According to St. Thomas Rescue, the incident took place at approximately 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 30 at Sapphire Beach on St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Authorities reported first responders and bystanders worked to recover the man from the waters.

“Our officers were notified by VITEMA control of CPR in progress at Sapphire Beach, St. Thomas,” said St. Thomas Rescue PIO Chris Watson. “A medically trained officer from St. Thomas Rescue arrived on the scene in under four minutes, and provided lifesaving measures along with bystanders who recovered an unresponsive male from the water.’

The Virgin Islands Fire and Emergency Medical Service reportedly transferred the man to a hospital in critical condition.

St. Thomas officials later confirmed with News 2 that the man — identified as 65-year-old Kenneth Haggard — died as a result of drowning.

According to News 2’s partner WKDZ Radio, Haggard was prominent attorney in western Kentucky whose main practice was in Hopkinsville.

In a statement, St. Thomas Rescue’s PIO stated the area has experienced three water-related fatalities in 2024.
