Horn of Africa faces its 5th failed rainy season

STORY: The Horn of Africa is facing its

fifth straight failed rainy season

which means its worst drought

in 40 years is only going to press on

(Clare Nullis, World Meteorological Organization)

“’Predictions show high chances of dryer than average conditions across most parts of the region, in particular the drought-affected areas of Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia are expected to receive significantly below rainfall until the end of the year. We are on the brink of an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe.”

The drought has coincided with a

global rise in food and fuel prices

“WHO is very concerned about this situation. It does lead to many families taking desperate measures to survive. You know, many thousands of people leave their homes in search of food, water and pasture. So, you know, 700,000 people are already facing famine in parts of Ethiopia, Somalia and South Sudan.”
