Hornell earns 10-0 shutout of visiting Haverling in season opener

HORNELL — Gates Miller was lights out on the mound and the offense was in midseason form as Hornell made coach Joe Flint a winner in his debut in the dugout with a 10-0 shutout of visiting Haverling on Tuesday at Maple City Park.

The Red Raiders (1-0) struck early with a six-run second inning to take control. Hornell went on to add a run in the fourth and three more in the fifth to put the 10-run rule into effect.

Miller went the distance, allowing just one hit with five strikeouts and no walks in five innings of work. Miller also had two hits, two RBI and scored a run offensively for the Red Raiders.

Davin Oyer added two hits, with a double, an RBI and a run scored. Wyatt Argentieri finished with two hits, including a triple, along with a walk and a run scored. Andy Davis and Shawn Rose both had a hit and scored two runs. Jake Ponticello added a hit to the cause.

Senior Zach Musso had the lone hit for Haverling (0-1), a double down the first base line. He was later stranded at third base. Owen Smith got the start on the mound and pitched two innings with two strikeouts. Ethan Brotz came on in relief and struck out two.
